First Character Disappears?

  • 1.  First Character Disappears?

    Posted Wed May 24, 2023 04:15 PM

I'm entering data directly into Data View and have run into an interesting problem. When I start typing a value into a field, I type the first character and then SPSS automatically highlights that first character, then replaces it with the second character I type. For example, if I want to type the number 12, I have to type 112 because SPSS overwrites the first character with the second. How can I resolve this? I'm on SPSS 29 on a Mac, and this is a brand-new install of SPSS. Thank you!

See the answer on Reddit where you posted the same thing.

Thanks. Was that you who left that comment on Reddit? I tried what that user recommended but it did not solve the problem, so the search is still on for a resolution. (That said, I was grateful to learn I should install the fixpack and that the value labels feature can cause issues.)

Yes, I posted that Reddit answer, but I'm a Windows-only user.

    Hi Stephanie,

I am unable to reproduce the behavior you describe on MacOS. When I place focus onto a cell in the Data Editor and begin typing a new value, I am automatically switched into 'edit mode' on that cell, the first character that I type is put into that editing cell, there is no selection on that first character, and the insertion caret is placed after the first character so that the second one typed follows the first.

    Some questions to help clarify:
    1. Have you installed the 29.0.1 version update?
    2. When you see this problem, are you entering text into a new and empty column, or into an existing column?
    3. If into an existing column, are you typing into a new and empty cell, or overwriting the contents of an existing cell that already contains a data value?

    Best regards,

Thank you for your help! I've attached a short video of the behavior.

    1 - I have installed the 29.0.1 update.
2 - It happens in both new and existing columns.
3 - It happens both when I type into an empty cell and when I overwrite the existing contents of a cell.

It's such a weird problem. I thought I was the only person experiencing it until I found this post on Reddit. This person says it seems to have spontaneously resolved itself and they're not sure how, possibly due to an update (which did not work for me):

Thank you @Stephanie S. I am now able to reproduce the problem and a defect has been filed for this.

Turns out the Reddit user was on the right track about Value Labels. I am only able to reproduce this issue when both of the following conditions are true:

    1. The user has the Value Labels feature in the Data Editor turned on. This is when value labels are shown in cells instead of the actual data values.
    2. The variable being modified has at least one value label defined.

I also see intermittant problems with this:
The value being entered does NOT correspond with any defined values used as value labels for that variable. For example if you have VLs defined for values 1, 2, and 3, then entering a 1, 2, or 3 as the first character will NOT cause the problem to occur. If one enters a 4 first, OTOH, the problem occurs.

Do you see the same thing? IOW if you have Value Labels turned on, and type into a new and empty column or into an existing column that does not have any value labels defined, then the problem does not occur. If that is the case for you as well, then the work-around for this issue until it is fixed in a subsequent release is to turn off Value Label display while entering data directly into the Data Editor.

A quick look at the behavior tells me that when Value Labels are on and the current variable contains at least one value label, that the program attempts to locate that value label to display it instead of the value. When a corresponding value label cannot be found for the value, the value becomes selected, thereby leading to the problem. \

I'll make sure to brief the engineer who works on this so they clearly understand the problem, and hence the solution.

    Thanks and best regards,

Thank you so much for looking into this and logging a defect ticket, @Curtis Browning

To clarify, this was happening on my SPSS installation even when I had the value labels feature in the Data Editor turned off. I'd been testing that feature to see if turning it on or off would resolve the problem, but it persisted despite the status of the value labels feature.

Also, the problem persists even in fields where there are no pre-defined values or value labels, such as in the MemScore variable. In fact, the problem persists in every field I've tried typing in, regardless of settings for that variable/column. I hope this is helpful.

I hope you have a great weekend!

Hello, @Curtis Browning ! I just wanted to check in and see if you saw my additional comments below, or if perhaps a workaround is possible. Happy Friday.

Oh also, David, not sure if you saw my other post above. Mentioning this because the known issue says, "Typing Data Into the Data Editor with Value Labels On Loses the First Character," which is not exactly the problem I'm having. More details:

Hi Stephanie. Yes I saw your postings. Thus far we have been unable to reproduce the problem in exactly the same way that you can. We need to be able to reproduce issues in order to fix them in code. If you are able to determine any other steps or intervening factors that make this happen please let us know. Other than that we will address the defect we were able to reproduce for the next release and if you are subscribed to the Tech Note as David described above, you will be notified of the fix. I believe that the fix we put in for the first problem should also fix what you are seeing.

    Best,

Has anyone found a solution to this problem yet? I am having the same issue and I can't seem to find any solution. Having to retype a letter every time I change cells is time consuming and driving me nuts when having to enter a lot of data... Help!

    Hi @Mariah Vegas

I was able to replicate this on my macOS 14.2.1, M1 Max computer with Statistics 29.0.2.0.

The issue seems to be related to the use of the right arrow key rather than the Tab key to move from one column to the next in the Data Editor.  As soon as you touch the right arrow key, you introduce this behavior into the SPSS Statistics session.  The only way out of it is to restart SPSS Statistics.

    WORKAROUND:

    • Restart SPSS Statistics
    • Use the tab key only.  Don't touch the right arrow key.

I have reported this issue to IBM SPSS Statistics Development.  Please subscribe to Known Issue DT257920 to be informed of the resolution to the defect when it happens

Hello, this issue has now been fixed and the fix will be in the next release, most likely IBM SPSS Statistics v30.0.0.

That's great to hear. From your wording here, it sounds like this bug will be fixed in the new v30 version, and in order to resolve this bug in our own workflow, we would need to purchase the newest version when it is released? Will this very frustrating bug not be fixed in an update to v29?

    Posted Tue January 16, 2024 12:31 PM

    Hi Stephanie,

Not sure if there will be a release for this issue before version 30. If you would like to request a special fix for this, those requests should go through an official support case.

However, this issue only occurs on MacOS, only when using an arrow key to exit cell editing mode, and only when using the MacOS Look and Feel. If you switch your Look and Feel in Statistics Options to one of the other three Look and Feel options, the problem won't occur.

    Hope this helps,

Thank you. What's happening for me (and the issue I originally created this post for) doesn't involve the arrow key. When I type the first character into a cell, SPSS automatically highlights that first character as I'm still typing and replaces it with the second character I type. So when I try to type the number 456, I just get 56 in the cell because SPSS overwrites the first character (4) with the second character (5).

I was having the same issue as Stephanie. However, I changed the view to SPSS Standard and it fixed the problem. I believe I was originally in Mac view. Attached a screenshot. Hope this helps. -Mariah

    Hi Mariah,

I'm very excited to find someone else who is having the same challenge, as it seemed others were not able to replicate the problem exactly as I was experiencing it. Changing the view to SPSS Standard did not fix it on my Mac, but I'm going to try reinstalling again, and then changing the view on the fresh install to see if that makes a difference.

    Hi Stephanie,

The Look and Feel (what you called "view" above) is the key to working around this issue. Thus far we have only been able to reproduce this issue when using the "Macintosh" Look and Feel, as mentioned by @Mariah Vegas above. If you are still able to reproduce the issue using other Look and Feel options such as "SPSS Standard", then you are experiencing another problem that we aren't seeing here.

    Some questions:

    1. What version of MacOS are you running?
    2. What version of Statistics are you running?
    3. Does your Mac have an M1 or an Intel chipset?
