Bug SPSS Statistics 30? deletes UTF-8 part of the Encoding

  • 1.  Bug SPSS Statistics 30? deletes UTF-8 part of the Encoding

    Posted 8 days ago

    Hello,

After updating to SPSS Statistics version 30 there are some issues with saving my syntax. The issue is it cannot be save anymore!?

When I open a syntax and change something and then want to save it, strangely enough it deletes the part UTF-8

So then it says Encoding:.  instead of Encoding: UTF-8.

And when then pressing save a pop up appears with an error that Save has failed.

Then I cannot do anything in the syntax it is totally blocked.

This is very annoying and I hope there is a solution for this.

Before the update this never happened.

Hi @Michel de Graaf, sorry to hear you're having difficulty saving syntax. I tried to reproduce the issue you describe with v30 and I cannot. I have asked our QA team to dig into this further to see if they can reproduce it.

In the meantime can I ask for more information please:

    1. Are you using the Windows or MacOS version of Statistics 30?
    2. When the "UTF-8" text disappears, is it right after typing syntax into the file, or after pressing the Save toolbar button?
    3. What happens if you try using File -> Save As when you are unable to save?
    4. Does this occur if you create a new syntax document or only when opening an existing one?

Thank you for your patience. We will work with you to get to the bottom of this.

    Best,

    Curtis

Really appreciate you and your team's work on this issue. It's incredibly frustrating working like this. Will you be rolling this out automatically to all users, or something else?

    Hello,

I'm so relieved to see this thread exists. I just upgraded to SPSS 30 today and have been having issues all day ever since I switched. I'm using a Windows install, my encoding is set to locale and English. In my case, upon opening an empty syntax, I can type a line or two of code and create an initial save; however, upon re-opening the syntax and confirming that my encoding settings have not changed, when I type one or more additional lines of code, the program allows me to re-save at most once (and sometimes not at all) before throwing me a "Failed to save document" error followed by the encoding error below:

At times, the syntax editor has seemingly glitched out while I'm typing and, after freezing for a short period, inserting text in unusual places and/or ways such as:

    • Inserting the input "RENAME" backwards (e.g. "EMANER") and in duplicate at the end of multiple lines

Or inserting duplicate stubs of my input (originally entered on line 2) at the end of the default encoding header in line 1 (as below):

With how quick the program is to crash, I've not been able to accomplish much of anything today! As such, I'm hoping that the fix for Michel's issue may hopefully resolve mine as well (and if not, that the QA team can get to the root of my issue too).

Hi @Keegan Phillips. In brief, yes it is the same issue as mentioned above. We are working round the clock to refresh all media so the fix should be available soon.

Apologies for the inconvenience, we have updated our testing processes to ensure this kind of issue won't recur.

    Hello,

Is there any more insight on when there will be a fix for the problem? I have to work from home right now because thankfully I haven't updated there yet. But my employer is not very happy about that.

    Hi Michel,

The temporary fix is to load the previous version of SPSS.

I opened a case with SPSS, and they sent me a link. The load for me was not intuitive... including having to right-click on the FC link to download SPSS v29, instead of just clicking it.

Also, they currently have it set up so that every time you open SPSS 29, you have to click NO, do not upgrade to v30.

Definitely been hard to get work done efficiently this week... until I reverted to the prior version.

    Hi @Michel de Graaf,

Yes, the new media will be fully available for download next Monday, October 7th. I believe that for on-prem licenses one can download the refreshed installers from the License Key Center (LKC) now.

    Thanks and regards,

    Hello Curtis,

Just to be sure, if I download this file (see attached screenshot) then in this file the fix is already build in?

Hi Michael, no guarantees yet on the MyIBM files being ready. The files uploaded to the License Key Center should be up to date though. I believe the MyIBM downloads may still be somewhere in the process of being published. That process is out of the hands of product development but I expect to complete soon.

    Curtis

    Hi,

Can you please tell me where I can find the update in License Key Center? How do I get there?

    I always installed through MyIBM.

Anybody? I cannot work in a normal way at the office. It is getting more frustrating. I need to stay at home.

I assume SPSS can give me a solution on how to get to the fix another way or tell me how to get to the license key center.

As said I installed through MyIBM. Because of the update my work is a disaster.

    Hi Michel,

Open a case with SPSS. Then you'll get the support you need in order to load SPSS v29. That's my recommendation.

See my earlier reply post in this thread for some notes about that.

    Best,

    Carolyn

    Very very annoying!

I am now at a point where I am really starting to get desperate. I am really not getting anywhere and by now I have been unable to go to the office to work for a week because of the bug. Once again I am downloading from MyIBM PA.

Apparently the fix does not show up there? Why, I am also a paying SPSS user, right? Opening a case doesn't work either (also a bug?) because when I press the submit butto nothing happens at all.

Then you go to the chat and then you get an email address that you can use mysphelp@us.ibm.com.

And then what do you get for a response?

    Hello,

You have reached the My Support Portal help desk (a.k.a. MySupport at  https://www.ibm.com/mysupport/s/). As a dedicated team, we can only help you with issue or questions related to this site. Unfortunately, your inquiry is out of our support scope.

For any product related issues or questions, please open a product support case from the Support Portal, so that a technician for that specific product can help you further ( https://www.ibm.com/mysupport/s/).

That's the problem!! I cannot open a case.

How do we fix this problem for me? Can somebody mail me the fix , give me a link to the fix.

Come on! this really can't go on!

    Hello @Michel de Graaf,

First off, thank you for your persistence and passion for our product, IBM SPSS Statistics!  It is gratifying to know we continue to have such staunch supporters of our efforts.

As you might imagine, releasing the next version of a product has many moving parts and is dependent upon many different entities.  The preparation for a new release 'drop' is the stuff of weeks of planning. In this case, we released the product only to immediately reverse course.  While the problems involved with this decision have now been resolved in the product, it is now up to us to make sure the product installation images are properly updated and posted to the myriad sources and mechanisms our customers use to obtain our software.  The process of updating and posting all of our images (See the table in our IBM SPSS Statistics 30.0 Download Document), unfortunately, will take some time still.

I have created Known Issue DT398797 to keep customers updated on our progress.  Please subscribe to this Known Issue and enable "Notifications" in your IBMid profile to be updated by email when this issue is resolved.

Alternatively, you could check in on the License Key Center login page where an updated notice will be posted until this issue is resolved.

    OK, on to solutions...

    Obtaining the latest installer:

I see that you  have referenced both Passport Advantage and MyIBM (https://myibm.ibm.com/dashboard) as sources where you have tried to download the software.  I can confirm:

    • The client installer media for IBM SPSS Statistics 30.0.0.0 on both macOS and Windows have been updated and are available for download in MyIBM.
    • The ISO files for IBM SPSS Statistics 30.0.0.0 on both macOS and Windows have been updated and are available for download in Passport Advantage.  Please note the updated part numbers and search them directly in Passport Advantage.
      • Part number M0N4CML     IBM SPSS Statistics Client 30.0.0 Microsoft Windows Multilingual (ISO Version)      10/6/2024   1,169,197,060 bytes
      • Part number M0N4DML     IBM SPSS Statistics Client 30.0.0 Mac OS Multilingual (ISO Version)                10/6/2024  1,248,223,230 bytes

The updated release of IBM SPSS Statistics 30.0.0.0 is build 172.

    Opening a Support case:
There can be many reasons that the portal would fail for someone trying to open a 'regular' Support case.  Most of these reasons involve the administrivia of your Support contract with IBM SPSS, and will require exchanging Personally Identifying Information -- something we really shouldn't do here in a public forum.
I suggest instead that you open a  Licensing case.  Anyone with an IBMid can open a Licensing Case, and it will give you access to a secure interface where we can dig into the specifics of your account.
If you still require a Support case, please follow this technote for creating a Licensing case

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Good to know fix will be rolled out this coming Monday, I thought something is wrong with my settings because I explore some after updating to version 30 but I never remember touching the setting about encoding.
