  • 1.  WebSphere Development Tool does not support Eclipse IDE later than 2020-06

    Hello,

I understand that from Eclipse 2020-09, it requires JAVA 11 or newer JRE/JDK. So WDT doesn't support Eclipse IDE later than 2020-06
However, our team would like to keep Eclipse IDE up to date, and WDT is also very essential for us.

Will WDT support Eclipse 2020-09 and later sometime in the future?
If so, does anyone know if there is an estimated time?

    Thank you

WebSphere Developer Tools for Liberty do now have a release that supports the Eclipse releases that support Java SE 11.
The WebSphere Developer Tools for WebSphere traditional does not have a release for the Eclipse IDE, the reason for this is that WebSphere traditional does not support Java SE 11 and the WDT function relies on some WebSphere traditional libraries that are not certified for Java SE 11. IBM does not comment on timelines for future releases outside of an NDA so I cannot provide any information on a timeline here.

    Hi Alasdair,

when you say that the libraries some WebSphere traditional libraries are not certified for Java SE 11, do you mean that they cannot compile under java 11?  Even if they cannot compile under java 11, I presume their bytecode should be able to run on the java 11 JRE.  Since the IBM Plugins are used for development and since being stuck at Eclipse 2020-06 (one year behind) is an important issue for developer, could we not be given a version of the plugin that could run in the JRE 11 inside eclipse 2020-09 and later?  That would be of great benefit to all developers who require the WebSphere Developer Tools for WebSphere tranditional to do their job.

    Hi,

It isn't about compiling code with Java SE 11, this is about running code on Java SE 11. The WebSphere Developer Tools for WebSphere traditional make use of some of the WebSphere traditional thin clients in order to connect to, deploy and debug applications on WebSphere traditional. These clients do not run on Java SE 11. Given that is a major feature of what WDT does it wouldn't make sense to have a WDT that without that. The work to get these clients running on Java SE 11 is significant and is the blocker here.

I remember now, I think that you are talking about the requirement to have the WebSphere thin client (com.ibm.ws.orb_8.5.0.jar) in the endorsed libraries.  Have you looked at java upgradable modules or adding it to the classpath as documented Migrating in the section "Removed Endorsed Standards Override Mechanism"?

    Hi Alasdair,

it has been 1 year and I am wondering if there is any progress.  People have to move to newer eclipse because eclipse 2020-06 does not have support for many new eclipse plugins.  Has IBM abandoned the support of WebSphere traditional server and is only interested in Liberty?  It would be really good to have a direction from you guys on the future of the IBM eclipse plugins to support the WAS traditional server.  We have support agreement for our WAS servers but there is none that cover the use of the eclipse plugins so there is nowhere to get official support.  If you know who at IBM provides official support for them please let us know and we will contact them.

    Thanks.

    Hi Mario,

This is an item that we are aware of and in the backlog.

We do understand the need and preference to work with the latest versions of Eclipse IDE.  We will keep everyone here posted on any news.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

When you say that some WebSphere traditional libraries are not certified for Java SE 11, do you meant that they cannot be compiled by JRE 11? I presume that those libraries can run in a JRE11 and since the IBM plugins are used for development in Eclipse (not for production work) and since being stuck on Eclipse 2020-06 is a major issue for a lot of developer (almost 1 year old and a lot of newer plugins or functionality are only available on newer Eclipse versions) could you not roll out a version of the IBM plugins that could run in a JRE11 as an interim or stop gap solution until such time as you have resolved the issue. This would make a lot of developer that rely on the IBM plugins for WebSphere traditional happy.
