About this event

Java remains a popular programming language, especially for enterprises. With open cloud-native API like MicroProfile and Jakarta EE, Java continues to lead in enabling developers to build cloud-native applications, particularly for Kubernetes-based deployments.

In this session, we will introduce you to these key technologies and lead you through interactive labs demo-ing how you can quickly create a basic RESTful web service that leverages open-source Java technologies, including the Jakarta EE Web Services specifications: JAX-RS and JSON-B, MicroProfile and the Open Liberty runtime. We'll then containerise this web service and launch it in Kubernetes, after which we will deploy it onto OpenShift. Come join this session for some hands-on learning with these great open-source Java APIs.

About the Speakers

Grace Jansen

Grace is a Developer Advocate at IBM, working with Open Liberty, MicroProfile and Cloud Technologies. She has been with IBM since graduating from Exeter University with a Degree in Biology. Grace enjoys bringing a varied perspective to her projects and using her knowledge of biological systems to simplify complex software patterns and architectures. As a developer advocate, Grace builds POC's, demos and sample applications, and writes guides and tutorials. She is a regular presenter at international technology conferences and has recently authored a book on reactive systems. Grace also has a keen passion for encouraging more women into STEM and especially Technology careers.

Jamie Coleman

Jamie is a software developer and Advocate for Open Liberty, MicroProfile and OpenJ9 based at IBM's R&D Laboratory in Hursley, UK. He is a subject matter expert in containerised solutions and takes a keen interest in emerging technologies with experience in Maven, git, Jenkins and microservice architecture. He fell in love with Java at University and has gone on to talk at many conferences about using Java with microservices. He has worked on a wide variety of projects such as modernising CICS mainframe testing infrastructure, creating and automating the creation of Docker images for IBM's products, contributing to a DevOps pipeline offering and creating web applications for events at the Lab. His recent passion is around raising awareness about energy consumption of technology and discovering ways to help reduce technologies carbon footprint.

YK Chang

YK is currently an architect and developer advocate on the IBM's application platform (Open Liberty/WebSphere) team and contributes to various OSS projects. His focus is on developer experience and the development of cloud-native applications using Eclipse MicroProfile, Jakarta EE and other cloud technologies. He is keen on how we can make life easier for developers.

Mary Grygleski

Mary is a Senior Developer Advocate with the Websphere/Liberty technology team at IBM, with a focus on Liberty, MicroProfile, Reactive Java, Open Source, Cloud, and Enterprise Distributed Systems. She started working as a software engineer with C and Unix, then got into Java, Open Source, and web development in the new Millennium, and now she has ventured into Reactive, Mobile, and the DevOps space. In her previous incarnations, she worked for several technology product companies in the Route 128 Boston Technology Corridor as well the San Francisco Bay Area. She now resides in the Greater Chicago area, and is the President and Executive Board Member of the Chicago Java Users Group (CJUG). She is also an active co-organizers for the Data, Cloud and AI In Chicago, Chicago Cloud, and IBM Cloud Chicago meetup groups. Mary continues to be amazed by how software innovations can dramatically transform our lives. Despite the many challenges in an ever-evolving technical world, she gets energized by the constant change and believes that she has uncovered the pathway to staying young. She can't wait to see what the next tech wave will be like.
