Troubleshoot: unable to import or export Excel files

Wed July 10, 2019 04:15 PM

♦ Applies to: IT Planning and Financial Management

Symptom: Unable to import or export Excel files with ITP

You cannot upload Microsoft Excel file data in the IT Planning tool, or export Excel file data from IT Planning.

What's going on

IT Planning & Financial Management uses the .CSV file format for uploaded data, and does not support default Excel filetypes such as .XLS and .XLSX.

Solution

Adopt .CSV as your standard data file format when using the IT Planning tool. You can export your .CSV budget to your computer, make changes to the .CSV file in Excel, and then import the new .CSV file back to Apptio. ITP's import and export features were built specifically to support this scenario. The following sections will cover a few best practices using the .CSV filetype.

Saving Excel files as .CSV

When saving Excel files, use the Save As function to make a copy of the file in .CSV format.

  1. Open Microsoft Excel and open the file you wish to upload to Apptio. Make any necessary adjustments.
  2. Click Save As and select the CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv) option as the file format. This will create a new .CSV file.
Click Save As and select the CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv) option as the file format.

You are able to edit .CSV files within Excel, allowing you to make adjustments as needed before uploading your files.

Import .CSV files to ITP

When importing .CSV files, you are replacing all current line item data with those of the imported file. There is no data merge or addition when importing files into ITP, only data replacement. For more information, see Enter or import line item data.

Export .CSV files from ITP

Files exported from ITP to your computer will be in .CSV format by default. For more information on exporting from ITP, see Export and populate line item tables or layouts.
