Steps to apply a date filter

Wed April 08, 2015 01:26 PM

You’ll often have data sets that contain more than one month’s worth of data. In these cases, you’ll need to apply a date filter so Apptio can determine which data to display in a given month. There are two primary types of date filters – row and column. The one you use will depend on the format of your data. If you have date-specific rows (and there’s a column with the date for that row), you’ll apply a row filter. If you have a separate column for each month’s data, you’ll apply a column filter.

The steps below describe how to apply a row date filter.

  1. In the Dev environment, open the Cost Transparency project.
  2. Click Studio > Data.
  3. Select the data set from which you want to filter the data.
  4. Click Edit Columns.
  5. Click the column that contains the date on which you want to filter. For example, this may be the date of the GL entry.
  6. Under Column Details, set the Date Filter to Row filter. As you navigate away from that field, the Column Details will adjust based on that setting.
  7. Click Save.

The steps below describe how to apply a column date filter.

  1. In the Dev environment, open the Cost Transparency project.
  2. Click Studio > Data.
  3. Select the data set from which you want to filter the data.
  4. Click Edit Columns.
  5. Click the first month’s column name. For example, if your fiscal year is January through December and you have multiple months of data starting in January, select the January column.
  6. Under Column Details, set the Date Filter to Column filter. As you navigate away from that field, the Column Details will adjust based on that setting.
  7. Under Column Details, enter a column name in the Data Column Name field that represents the value of the data in the column. For example, if the column contained GL amounts, you could set the Data Column Name to “Amount”.
  8. Click Save.

Can you say a bit more about the "Row Filter" option? From the help:

Row Filter (Start)/Row Filter (End). When filtering data by date, use this option to define the column that contains the values for the start or end time for the filter. For example, given two columns named Project Start Date and Project End Date, you could use these to set the row filter for the month you are currently viewing.

It doesn't seem to work the way I would expect. If I have a row that has a Project Start Date of Jun FY2015, I wouldn't expect that row to show in Jan FY2015, but it does. Am I misunderstanding? If so, how do I make this work the way I think it should?
