Hints and tips for multiple language environments

This article provides useful hints and tips for users who have multiple language environments.

Always set your preferred locale/language in your profile

The login panel allows you to select a desired language for the current session.

Unfortunately, this option can result in some undesirable side-effects. For example, if another user logs in to the same Maximo server from another machine with the same user ID, but they select a different language during login, there can be mixed languages in both sessions.

To prevent that from happening, do not rely on selecting the language from the login panel. Instead, after you log in, select the Default Information option in the Profile menu and set the desired language and locale values.

Upon saving, those choices will be associated with the user ID. The saved preference will override the language choice at login.
NOTE: If another session is open with the same user ID when you try to save your choices in the Profile menu, you cannot save your settings. The following error message is displayed.

Update the Start Center to correct mixed language situations

After you change the values for language and locale in the Profile menu, sometimes the Start Center fails to refresh completely.
You can force a refresh by selecting Update Start Center.

Carefully consider your choice of Base Language

When you install Maximo for the first time, you are asked to select a base language. It is important to consider that choice carefully because there are certain limitations associated with base language:
There is only one base language. Once set, that value is permanent for that entire Maximo system. That value will be associated with every subsequent Maximo product that you install.
Certain labels and other objects are always displayed in the base language, no matter what language is saved as the user preference. Therefore, to avoid mixed languages, the base language should ideally be the same as the user preference.

Set the first day of the week if you do not want the default specified for your browser's locale

The first day of the week is determined by the calendar and locale options chosen (and saved) in the user profile. If those options are not set, Maximo will use the locale of the browser.
