DEPLOYING AN IBM STORAGE PROTECT BLUEPRINT AND USING THE S3 OBJECT AGENT

Tue January 21, 2025 02:05 AM

IBM Storage Protect is IBM’s flagship enterprise backup and recovery offering. Formerly known as
Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) and before that ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM), IBM
Storage Protect has a rich history dating back to 1988. It enables backup and recovery of physical,
virtual and cloud environments of all sizes and has been field proven in some of the most demanding
and complex environments worldwide. IBM Storage Protect also offers in-line data deduplication and
compression to help drive down infrastructure costs which, for secondary storage, has seen
exponential growth in the recent years.

In spite of its many features and proven track record, IBM Storage Protect (ISP) has been historically
less user friendly compared to products from a host of other backup vendors. From sizing to
deployment to administration, IBM Storage Protect probably has one of the steepest learning curves
of any of the products in IBM’s Software Defined Storage (SDS) portfolio. In recent times IBM has
made strides to address this with the introduction of deployment blueprints and the Operations
Center. The IBM Storage Protect blueprints make it easy to size a new installation and provides scripts
to help automate the deployment of this software on validated hardware.

This document is primarily meant to help IBM Technical Sellers, Business Partners and IBM customers
learn how to deploy an IBM Storage Protect Blueprint. In addition, this document will showcase one
of the best features of IBM Storage Protect which is the S3 Object Agent. This ability to act as an S3
compliant object store with built-in data reduction is one of its many competitive advantages.

Hi Mita

Didn't consider replication and how best to integrate the object agent. Perhaps using a load balancer (like HAProxy) might be feasible.. But need to check how replicated objects work / are accessed.

Perhaps need to update the document after testing.

Hi,

Do you maybe know if we can expect support for some kind of failover of S3 clients in ISP replicated environments?

Thanks,

Mita

Thanks Tomas.. Wasn't aware of that. Will take a look!

Good work!

Do you know that this is also available using Spictera Unified Storage in combination with MinIO?

Just mount IBM Storage Protect filespace on your path of preferences, where you want to have your back end of MinIO.

All I/O passes over will be translated to IBM Storage Protect Client API calls and land on the IBM Storage Protect server storage.

Eg

# mount -t spfs /TSM

Or on your windows drive letter of your choice.

Excellent work! Storage Protect is the most robust, versatile, and scale-up data protection platform in the world. In addition, you get all of this great technology at a cost-effective price. Some of the new platforms are good at some things, but like I always say "They don't build 'em like they used to."
