Overview of attribute and domain functions for multiple language environments


This article describes Maxattribute.Localizable, Maxattribute.Mlinuse and Maxattribute.Mlsupported attributes. ALN-/SYNONYMDOMAIN are also described.

Localizable attribute

The Localizable attribute identifies whether the object attribute can be translated. If the value is 1, then the data is translatable and can be exported to XLIFF files by the TDToolkit.

Mlinuse and Mlsupported attributes

Not every table or column in Maximo can support the multilingual (ML) function. The MLINUSE flag in the MAXATTRIBUTE table indicates whether a column is ML enabled or not. The MLSUPPORTED flag indicates whether a column can be enabled for the ML function in the future.Columns that are associated with domains do not currently support the ML function, but the domain description does support the ML function.Not every table in Maximo Asset Management is marked as ML-supported; only tables that present the same data in multiple languages are supported. For example, the MAXATTRIBUTE metadata table contains base language data for the attribute definition (TITLE and REMARKS), and the language table contains ML data. The TITLE data from MAXATTRIBUTE is used by the Maximo framework for data processing in the UI to display the titles in different languages. The REMARKS data is used for field help. For this reason, the MAXATTRIBUTE table is marked as multilingual and has a language table.The WORKORDER table is not marked as ML enabled because a work order is created in the language that the user is operating in. When the record is created, the data that is entered by the user is stored in the language of the user. This data is not translated because the record is rarely viewed by another language user. The work order table can contain data in different supported languages, but each record is in the particular language in which it was created.The MLINUSE attribute cannot be active for a column without the MLSUPPORTED attribute also being active. When a column is marked as MLINUSE, then it is part of the language table.There are two tables for those objects that must support multiple languages
  • Base Table
  • Base tables usually have the same name as the object, such as the ITEM table for the ITEM object.
  • The base table contains attributes of non-translatable data types, for example:
    • integer, datetime, etc.
    • string data, which does not support multiple languages--for example, the STATUS attribute
    • attribute values (in base language) for attributes that support multiple languages
  • Language table
  • Language tables have the prefix "L_" appended to the base table name. For example, the language table for ITEM is L_ITEM.
  • The language table contains the translated values of attributes that support multiple languages and associated language codes (except for the base language).

Example

In this example, the base language is English, and German and Spanish are installed as additional languages.

Domains

The INTERNAL column of the MAXDOMAIN table sets the localization properties for the ALNDOMAIN and SYNONYMDOMAIN tables.If the domain values for ALNDOMAIN or SYNONYMDOMAIN are not translatable, then the INTERNAL column for that domain must be set to either 1 or 2. If the INTERNAL column is not set to either 1 or 2, then the value is considered translatable. For example:
  • maxdomain.internal = 0: Both the VALUE and the DESCRIPTION are exported to an XLIFF file and the user can manually add new records in the Domain application.
  • maxdomain.internal = 1: The VALUE is not exported, but the DESCRIPTION is exported to an XLIFF file and the user CANNOT add new records in the Domain application.
  • maxdomain.internal = 2: The VALUE is not exported but the DESCRIPTION is exported to an XLIFF file and the user CAN manually add new records in the Domain application.
Note: The DESCRIPTION is always exported, regardless of what value the maxdomain.internal column is set to. There is no user interface to set the INTERNAL value.When values in the DOMAIN are localizable and the base language is not English, then the values will not be in English. The MAXATTRIBUTE column that uses the translated domain should have its localizable flag set to 0 and a record must be inserted in the MAXDOMAINLINKS table.The value is used in the associated attributes and the description is used for display only.


Domain values are used in the associated attributes. For example, the value in STATUS attribute of the WORKORDER is taken from the value in the WOSTATUS domain.
