Calculated metrics are exremely powerful, and allow you to add metrics or increases for chargeback, compare metrics between two dimensions, track custom metrics agains reporting data, and can help you build a unit economic cost metric for cloud consumption. There are as many other uses as you can think of to be able to build custom, trackable calculated and compartive metrics against your data!
