Add slicers to a Master Report

Sat July 21, 2018 01:02 PM

♦ Applies to: All applications on TBM Studio 12.3+ with Template v104+

Sometimes the idiosyncrasies of business prompt the addition of a slicer to an out-of-the-box (OOTB) Apptio report. The most commonly added slicer is an organizational hierarchy, such as legal entity, geography, or business unit. Beginning with Template v104, Apptio report collections have a Master Report (the template for OOTB reports) that can be updated for the entire collection. By customizing Master Reports instead of individual OOTB reports, you can avoid having your customizations overwritten by future Apptio releases.

Considerations:

  • Slicers can include multiple dimensions of a hierarchy (for example, Continent, Country, City). For more information, see Hierarchical slicer
  • Global filters persist across all reports in a collection.

To add a slicer to a Master Report:

  1. Open TBM Studio.
  2. In the Project Explorer, click Reports.
  3. Click the down arrow, then select Master Reports.
  4. Click the Master Reports down arrow to see the list of Master Reports associated with all the installed components and collections.
  5. Click the report that you want to modify.
  6. In the Home tab, click Check Out.
The report template is displayed, with the existing slicers and a Home button at the top right of the report.

  7. In the Report tab, click Compact Slicer or Row Slicer, depending on the type of slicer you want to create.
    The Slicer Configuration panel appears.

  8. In Project Explorer, expand Perspectives, then expand the group that contains the perspective that you want for the new slicer.
  9. Drag the perspective to the Slice By panel.
The new slicer appears in the template.

TIP  Avoid adding so many slicers that they run into the report title.

  10. When you are finished, check in the Master Report.
The OOTB reports associated with the updated Master Report now reflect your changes, and the changes will not be overwritten by future Apptio releases.
