Optim Server on Linux connecting to SQLServer Data Source using Data Direct drivers

    Hi All,

Has anyone successfully deployed an Optim Server on Linux and used the DataDirect drivers to connect to SQLServer.

My customer has a PMR open for this but I was wondering if anyone out there has done this successfully?

    Thanks,
    Barbara

We are successfully archiving MSSQL from Linux. Masking is limited to INSERT processing, the Linux MSSQL Loader is not supported yet (if ever?)

    Hi Ed,

Have you used DataDirect ODBC drivers for MS SQL server shipped with Optim Server or have you bought (Progress) DataDirect ODBC drivers (SQL Server ODBC Driver for Linux | Tutorial ) separately?

If former, is there any interface to connect DSN and fetch data from command line shipped with Optim Server on Linux (before designing extract process)?

I know there is a connection testing utility called testODBC (??) but it returns only whether odbc.ini is successful or not.

    Thanks in advance,

    Ozgur

    Hi Ed et al,

Like Barbara mentioned before, Optim classical GUI just stalls and causes the server crash after some time.

We have tried to run (extract process which runs all right locally btw) service via Optim Designer and Optim revealed a bit more info lines in log file.

Would you mind taking a look at our configuration (below) in Linux? Optim Server doesn't find anything wrong with pstserv.cfg when we run
    pr0svce -v pstserv.cfg
    to validate

    Yet we experience below whilst

Running batch in Optim designer – error in log

    Hi,

I have looked at most of the discussion. My preliminary analysis tells me that some where some configuration is missing. Please note that if you submit job from Designer associating to Linux Optim server, then internally pr0cmnd job would be submitted on Linux Optim server. Hence it is required properly configure pstlocal.cfg file.

Can you please verify by manually submitting same job on Optim linux server using pr0cmnd. If it fails then please send me pstlocal.cfg and pr0cmnd trace file.

    Thanks,

Hi, we dont use sql server databases, but oracle databases,  i think the principle is the same.
We launch pr0cmnd commands on AIX server to
          extract, insert data
      and
         export and import optim objects.
and we use the old GUI
We didnt need to start the optim server (rtserver) and so we didnt need pstserv.cfg until we use  archive request to delete data before reinserting (with the archive request you can choose the tables you want to delete, it is not the case with  the delete request). The pr0cmnd command on aix only needs pstlocal.cfg to be defined for extract, insert, delete. and there is no need to start the server. only the archive request needs the rtserver to be started.  so the dbaliases must be defined in the pstlocal.cfg to extract, insert, load and delete and in the pstserv.cfg if the archive requests are used.

In the PSTSERV.cfg file, I think, Server parameter is set to Local so it is going to PSTLOCAL.cfg file.

    Hello Vishwas,

Thank you for a quick reply on this.
We are trying to extract data from MS SQL Server and have the same configuration as mentioned by Ozgur Gul (ODBC for Linux), pstserv.cfg and pstlocal.cfg are configured as well.

Note that we are using Optim classic and we are able to achieve this using Optim client (Windows).
We tried to run this using Optim Server (Installed on Linux) and the server just hangs.
     - Use Optim client and delegate request to Optim Server (using "Server" drop down)
     - submit pr0cmnd locally on the linux box

Tested this Issue with the below Optim Versions :-
    11.3.0.4
    11.3.0.5
    11.3.0.6
    11.3.0.7

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

What is the MSSQL version? 2016+ is only supported on Windows, you can't use Linux. Earlier MSSQL versions can be done (we have a few applications using it that way too).

Ed - Thanks for your note. For our implementation, Optim Directory was on DB2 and our source & target dbs were on MS SQL Server 2014.

BTW on April 17th you said that you would get feedback from your Pune Team Lead regarding some linux configuration details for Optim but (Barbara and) I haven't heard back from you unfortunately. Just a gentle reminder.. :o)

    Thanks Ozgur for an update.

    Hello Ed Lipson,

    MS SQL Server Version : Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP3-GDR) (KB4057113) - 10.50.6560.0 (X64)
    Host Machine's OS : Windows 2012 R2

We have taken care of the below setup considerations from IBM documentation for SQL Server :-

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/detailed-system-requirements-v113-ibm-infosphere-optim-solutions-and-sql-server-data-source-dbms

Below is for SQL Server 2008 which we are using with my comments:-

The following considerations apply when using an Optim server to access SQL Server on Linux or UNIX:
    • SQL Versions higher than 2014 are NOT currently supported on Linux or UNIX - OK , we use 2008
    • You must use the DataDirect ODBC driver manager distributed with your Optim solution to configure the server on a Linux or UNIX machine. For information needed to install and configure the DataDirect ODBC driver manager, see the Progress DataDirect "DataDirect Connect® Series for ODBC Users Guide". - We are using OOsqls27.so shipped with Optim, TESTODBC returns "Success"
    • The Optim directory cannot reside on Linux or UNIX. - Optim Direcory (DB2) is on Windows

Could you please help me with the ODBC.ini file that you are using ? I would like to have a look at it

    Thanks,
    Suraj

    Hello Ed,

Thanks for sharing this, we have the same configuration. Could you please post pstserv.cfg and pstlocal.cfg files.

Also, couple of questions below :

    1) Which version of Optim are you using to perform this task ?
    2) How are you setting up the environmental variables ? Example : ODBCINI, LD_LIBRARY_PATH etc ?
    3) Whether SQL Server is 64 or 32 bit ?
    4) SQL Server uses Dynamic port ?

Really appreciate your time on this

    Thanks,

I can't really share all that, I would have to rip it apart to obfuscate anything about the environment, possibly masking something you need

I masked the data in the files which is considered sensitive internal only. I hope this helps. I'll be off next week, so I will not respond until then.

    Hello Ed,

Great help ! Thank you for sharing this.
I had a look at your files and see that your Optim directory is hosted on Oracle.
We have hosted our Optim directory on DB2 LUW and that is where the issue exists.
I tried to switch our Optim directory to MS SQL and everything just works well.

I will keep this thread updated if at all I find a solution to this.

    Thanks,
    Suraj

Hi Suraj - Just out of curiosity, does your Optim Directory on SQL Server is running on Windows server or Linux server?
