Minimum installation for IBM MQ for Sterling B2B adapter containers

    Hi everyone,

I could not find this question addressed anywhere else so I'm turning to the community.  We are currently on Sterling B2B 5.2.6.3 and using adapter containers with only the bundled ActiveMQ software and that is the extent we use any message queuing.  For anyone that is now using B2B 6.0+, do you use adapter containers and if so, what was the bare minimum required installation for IBM MQ?  In looking over the complexity of IBM MQ, I am wondering if it's worth having to implement it just to keep adapter containers or if we just discontinue using them?  Since we'll be doing a fresh install of B2B 6.0.3 rather than an upgrade, keeping the adapter container configuration isn't required.  Is IBM MQ required for utilizing clustering for high availability without adapter containers (as we want to take advantage of high availability)?  Are there any other good reasons for using IBM MQ with Sterling B2B?  Any advice and/or insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Anna

    Hello Anna,

Introduction of Websphere MQ for adapter containers will enable B2Bi cluster to process messages from container adapters on any available node. With ActiveMQ it could have been achieved only after customization to ActiveMQ. The WebSphere MQ installation that comes with B2Bi is the minimal one you need. You need to weigh on complexity over stability and then make a decision on whether to have containers or not. If you have very stable infrastructure with minimal downtime on the application server then adapter containers may not be needed.

IBM MQ is not required for achieving clustering between application nodes. B2Bi uses JGroups cluster libraries for clustering. as of V6.0.3, IBM MQ is used only for adapter containers.

If you have a well-architectected HA system with multiple B2Bi nodes and external load balancer (with monitor) sending traffic to different nodes then adapter containers may not be very useful as you are achieving HA using B2Bi. With support for rolling updates, you can keep downtime to minimal.

You may want to consider Docker swarm or Kubernetes or openShift certified containers to achieve even better availability with minimal human intervention.

    Hello Dhiraj,

For a simple use case, e.g. hosting an isolated HTTP Server on an Adapter Container, now IBM MQ is needed.
I don't find any reference whatsoever in the documentation, that explains such use case.

Primary use of Adapter Container is to offload the connection load to a separate JVM, so that Engine JVM doesn't start throwing OOMEs.
Is there a page/point where I can refer to, to read and understand how IBM MQ needs to be setup especially to be used with IBM Sterling B2Bi ?

    Your help is much appreciated.

Dhiraj - couple of questions related to the IBM MQ .

    1. Does this IBM MQ comes as a package inside the packages folder which can be installed to use / confgure adapter container in B2Bi  or we need to download from passport advantage separately alongwith procuring licenses ?

    2. Can this IBM MQ be used as a standalone product as well or it has to be coupled with Sterling Integrator only ?

Ans:    IBM MQ is shipped along with B2BI, which you need to download from passport advantage.  IBM MQ, IBM DB2 workgroup editions are bundled with B2BI, which you can download from passport advantage.

    2. Can this IBM MQ be used as a standalone product as well or it has to be coupled with Sterling Integrator only ?

Ans:  No,  IBM MQ which comes with Sterling Integration can only be used with the product only.

    Sreedhar -

Thank you for the response. One more follow-up question on that. Can we implement the below use case without any issues in such case-

Sterling B2B 6.0.3 alongwith bundled IBM MQ hosted on cloud.
And then the IBM MQ on cloud (internal to B2Bi) sending/receiving messages with on-prem standalone IBM MQ .

So on both side, we will have queue managers and queue and communication occuring between them.

Is there any challenge in achieving the same other than the latency which we are still working on ?

    Pranjit,

yes,  you should be able to use the above mentioned MQ deployment.   need to ensure that bundled MQ is only used for B2BI integration, other product workloads are not used with this bundled IBM MQ.

As you are deployment MQ in IBM cloud and on-prem,  you should be leveraging local, remote queue manager communication between these two.
