Hi

I have always used a direct connected workstation to connect to the Technician Port on the V5000 , V7000 series Storage Arrays
Its always been disconnected after initial setup.

Does it need to be disconnected though

I understand it should not be connected via a Switch Port
But if it was connected via a NIC Port (direct cable) to (say) a Windows Server, can it stay connected
(and specifically, the NIC port on the WIndows server would be disabled)

I can test this the next time I go to the datacenter - but thought someone within the community may know

IMHO there is no concern having a service PC permanently attached to the tech port.
It may be set to obtain IP address via DHCP (from the system's tech port), or just configure it with a fixed IP in the 192.168.0.x range.

I realized I missed to address your initial question regarding the disconnection.
I believe, this might be solved with assigning a fixed IP address.

IMHO there is no concern having a service PC permanently attached to the tech port.

Spectrum Virtualize creates an event in the Storwize/FlashSystems when someone connects to the technician port to notify the storage administrators that someone is trying to access the storage system. You will probably miss that security notification if you keep the personal computer/laptop always connected to the storage system.

1) I would like to leave the Port plugged in 'all' the time
2) It would be on a standalone NIC port - directly cabled between a server AND the Technician Port RJ45
3) The NIC would be 'disabled' in the Server - so no 'packet' traffic would be passing to the Technician Port
4) There would be no switch between the server and the Technician Port

Would this work?

1) I 'dont know' - This is probably my lack of knowledge
----My thoughts were; if a Canister Corrupted, the only way back in would be via the Technician Port

nope you don't need to access technician port. If a canister fails you have another one to see the state of the failed one. we are using service ip and service interface for this kind of things. add service ip for both canisters, try to access via your local network https://serviceipaddr/service 
all you need is this one. leave T-Port alone :)

Fully understood

I have it 'all' set up

Service IP, Management IP etc etc

I was trying to plan for a 'worst scenario' - both Canisters un responsive, etc etc
But - In that case - Its unlikely the service port would work
