  • 1.  Using Spectrum Scale as back-end for Windows DFS

    Posted Mon August 23, 2021 09:41 AM
    Hi,

I have a customer which is currently using Windows DFS with Windows file serving services as a back-end. Now they are moving to Spectrum Scale but they still would like to use Windows DFS functionality and make Spectrum Scale as back-end for file serving services.

I am tasked to do this project and I'm still not sure how to implement the Windows DFS with Spectrum Scale as back-end.

Any documentations or guide is really greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi,
As far as I know, there is no information about "Windows DFS" in Spectrum Scale "Documentations".

What do you mean by "implement the Windows DFS with Spectrum Scale as back-end"?
I can not imagine how Spectrum Scale file system is working as a back-end of Windows DFS.

    Hi Ozeki,

I see this listed under SMB limitations from here: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/spectrum-scale/5.0.5?topic=smb-limitations

"IBM Spectrum Scale can act as a MS-DFS target or can redirect an entire share. But it does not allow any redirects from within an exported tree."

So I'm wondering if there some documentations or guide on how to implement this.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi,
I can not find any description about how to implement Windows DFS with Spectrum Scale SMB services.
The other description I could find is
    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/spectrum-scale/5.1.1?topic=reference-mmsmb-command
msdfs proxyThis option enables the IBM Spectrum Scale customers to configure DFS redirects for SMB shares. If an SMB client attempts to connect to such a share, the client is redirected to one or multiple proxy shares by using the SMB-DFS protocol. Here, "msdfs proxy" needs a value to be assigned, which is the list of proxy shares. The syntax for this list is,

I know this is not what you are looking for.
The reason why there is not description about it could be that Spectrum Scale SMB service just provides the way to define "Shares" on GPFS. How you want to enable this Share for Windows DFS target is not in the scope of Spectrum Scale.
Here is the article on how to create SMB exorts(shares) with Spectrum Scale.
    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/spectrum-scale/5.1.1?topic=scale-creating-smb-exports

Once you can access this Share, I believe it can be defined as Windows DFS target.
How to define Windows DFS target can be found in many places.

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Ozeki
