  • 1.  FCM 2.0

    Posted Wed July 29, 2020 03:20 PM
We recently ordered additional FCMs for our existing V7000 Gen3 (2076-724) and found that the FRU for the new arrived FCMs is different from the existing one. After further reserarch, the new FCMs are FCM2.0.

In the public information we can found below, only one slide (page 33) shows the benefit of FCM2.0... Up to 50% Better Performance. No other information can be found, nor through IBM Support.

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/sites/default/files/inline-files/$FILE/Accelerate_831_UpdateV2.pdf

What's the detail or spec difference between FCM1.0 and FCM2.0? Any lab statistics available so I can show it to my director?

    Thanks,
    Edward

    Hi Edward,

IBM does not publish the FlashCore module specifications as we do not sell them as standalone components.

In addition to the material published on the Accelerate, I have attached the breakout of the performance deltas against first-gen FCMs, as well as the enhanced drive endurance to DWPD 2. Slight change on the endurance further is the DWPD is rated against the highest capacity offering with incompressible data.  For 1st-gen FCMs, the DWPD 1 was weighted against 19.2TBu so the FCMs can be up to 4x the endurance per TB in the larger drives (the smaller drives push the envelope to DWPD 10+).

We have a comfort with the new drives that we pushed sales of all new systems and system expansions to use the newer drive models, deprecating the original AHS1-AHS3 models.

    Thanks!

    Hi, Matt,

    Thank you for the information.

As the FCM2.0 has better performance, will it be a problem if both FCM1.0 and FCM2.0 are mixed in an array, or the overall performance will be forced down to be consistent at FCM1.0 speed?

    Thanks,
    Edward

    Edward,

The overall performance would be at least that of the FCM 1.0 modules with the data going to the FCM2.0 performing better.  So, overall, performance may improve slightly.  It will definitely be no worse.

    Thanks,

    Edward,

There is no problem mixing them in arrays as the overall performance will be slightly better than just the FCM1.0 modules.  Since the overall performance of the FCM2.0 modules is better, the overall performance of the array will go up slightly.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks,

Matt, is FCM 2.0 what ships with the 7200 and 9200?

From IBM sales manual, the feature code for FCM1.0 (#ADS1, #ADS2, #ADS3) is no longer available as of April 11th 2020. The FCM2.0 (#ADS5, #ADS6, #ADS7, #ADS8) is the replacement. IBMer can confirm it for you.

Yes, the newer FCMs are compatibile and supercede the original FCMs.

All FlashSystem 7200s and FlashSystem 9200s are shipped with the newer FCMs. (FCM2 is not the official name, but yeah, FCM2 :) )
