Data Reduction Pools -Real life usage

    Hi everyone,
I just wanted to reach out and ask the community about the usage of DR pools in the field.

Have you installed many at your site/clients site?
I must say we have been reluctant to configure DRP and mostly use the benefit from FCM compression, however for some cases deduplication is mandatory/required.

Could you share you experiences with DRP and how its performing in your installs?

    Thanks for sharing!

Sharing the experience from a +40 Flashsystem Financial Services Organization.

In general DRP pools is not used, and FCM Compression is used, however as it is pointed out there are solutions where deduplication is almost mandatory.

DRP Pools have been implemented for the VDI solution supporting in excess of 8.000 persistent installations for mainly contractors etc. - based on a template, however with a lot of modifications like specific software installs for developers etc.

The Flashsystems running the VDI solution is separated and maximum configuration for Memory to offset Deduplication use of both Database and metadata cache.

Sites are redundant but discrete, around 4000 VDI served from 2 Flashsystems in a Cluster at one site. 390TB Written Capacity. Compression saves 97TB and Deduplication 187TB. So on the FCM 106TB Data is written which cannot compress further however it can compress DRP metadata overhead.

Performance is much in-line with other Flashsystems, in general DRP pools seem to have more Amplification on reads towards backend and very good Coalescing of writes to the backend - as expected I would say.

We have not been impacted by lower write bandwidth and potential higher latency compared to legacy pools, but VDI is sort of a special installation and almost mandatory to have DRP pools.
