Taking Business Continuity to New Levels in Multi-Cloud Environments

Recent market research by Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) confirms that almost every business is leveraging cloud technology or planning to do it soon. 40% of these companies are already using cloud infrastructure in some way as a disaster recovery target.1

At the same time, enterprises around the globe are moving to flash storage at high velocity.2 This means that for most organizations, all three trends are strongly influencing technology decisions at once. But where can these companies turn to find solutions that simultaneously provide the performance of flash and enable multi-cloud business continuity?

The new IBM FlashSystem 9100 Solution for Business Continuity and Data Reuse does all this, and much more. As one of IBM’s Business Partners noted:

“Our customers are deploying private cloud solutions that embrace the use of containers,” said Sven Eichelbaum, Managing Director of IBM Business Partner SVA. “Prior to the announcement of the IBM FlashSystem 9100, this was a risky process cobbled from disparate components. But the IBM FlashSystem 9100 solves that problem. With the FlashSystem 9100 we can not only provide an NVMe-based all flash solution with unmatched performance but also provide well-integrated solutions to our customers based on IBM's solutions blueprints for containerized environments that leverage Dockers and Kubernetes.”

IBM FlashSystem 9100 integrates the performance and efficiency of flash and the Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) protocol with the reliability and innovation of IBM FlashCore technology software-defined capabilities of IBM Spectrum Storage Software.

IBM spectrum virtualize for public cloud

Public cloud-based business continuity solutions offer several advantages. It helps minimize capital outlays while maintaining the accessibility of precious data. Production data can be stored on-premises which can help you to ensure security and improve system performance, while your disaster recovery infrastructure with very low recover time and recovery point objectives (RTO/RPO) can be provisioned in the cloud at little capital expense. IBM Spectrum Storage software family members offer several ways to implement cloud-based business continuity solutions. Now, a Business Continuity and Data Reuse solution based on IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud, accompanied by a low-risk validated blueprint is available as a unified solution with IBM FlashSystem 9100 storage systems.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud is software that is deployed on IBM public cloud infrastructure to create enterprise class, virtualized, cloud block storage for virtualized or physical applications running in the public cloud.3 Through native capabilities in Spectrum Virtualize (both on-premises or in a public cloud), synchronous or asynchronous mirroring and IP–based replication (without any additional gateways) allows you to mirror data and manage it across both private and public clouds. Within the IBM FlashSystem 9100 Solution for Business Continuity and Data Reuse, a relationship is enabled between on-premises IBM FlashSystem 9100 running IBM Spectrum Virtualize and an instance of Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud on IBM Cloud infrastructure. This positions you to reduce CAPEX and OPEX budgets by foregoing expensive secondary data center equipment, real-estate, and administration. IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud enables extremely low recovery, as well as data replication and migration between local storage and the IBM Cloud, and between IBM Cloud data centers. The solution is qualified for IBM Cloud data centers in over 55 worldwide locations.

Traditional practices that provide data replication simply by copying storage at one facility to largely identical storage at another facility aren’t usually an option where public cloud is concerned. And using software-based solutions (often only supporting Virtual Machines exclusively) to replicate data can impose unnecessary loads on application servers. IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud provides a new storage-based data services for hybrid cloud solution to combine on-premises and cloud storage for greater flexibility at lower cost across a range of RPO/RTO targets.

IBM Spectrum Copy Data Management (CDM) offers additional data reuse capabilities as part of the Business Continuity and Data Reuse solution. IBM Spectrum CDM can help lower costs, improve business agility, and increase the value of data assets either on-premises or in the public cloud. The solution enables you to deploy multi-cloud environments for business continuity, while also providing data reuse functionality for the data replicated to the cloud and managed by Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud. Data reuse scenarios include: DevOps, reporting, analytics, and much more. IBM Spectrum CDM is used directly on the IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud volumes through a set of integrated APIs. No additional software needs to be purchased to implement this solution – it’s all contained within the IBM FlashSystem 9100 Solution for Business Continuity and Data Reuse.

“Leading enterprises have discovered that mining data assets for additional insight and business value delivers real competitive advantages. The idea is simple but doing it effectively is difficult,” states Randy Kerns, Chief Strategist, Analyst with Evaluator Group. “With the new IBM FlashSystem 9100 storage arrays, IBM has provided a powerful new platform as a foundation for delivering value. Customers can deploy a range of IBM Spectrum Storage solutions with the new systems designed to easily enable multi-cloud architectures, simplify data protection, and maximize data reuse – all while providing the speed and efficiency of NVMe-accelerated flash. IBM FlashSystem 9100 is a leap forward in increasing business value for customers.”

System downtime has become essentially unacceptable in today’s business climate. Cloud-based business continuity solutions offer many advantages – if you can implement them effectively.
