Azure Backup uses the MARS agent to protect folders, files, and system states from machines on-premises and Azure virtual machines. The backups are then stored in an Azure Recovery Services vault in Azure. The agent can be run:
Directly on-premises Windows computers. These computers can backup directly to the Recovery Services vault in Azure.
On Azure VMs running Windows together with Azure VM backup extension. Azure VM backup extension. The agent backups specific folders and files within the VM.
On a Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS) instance or System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) server. The machines and their workloads are backup either to the MABS server or Data Protection Manager. Then, MABS and Data Protection Manager use the MARS agent to backup to a vault on Azure.

Find out how to Backup architecture, which runs on the MARS agent using a separate MABS and a Data Protection Manager server.
Examine the evidence and see what you can be backed up with a MARS representative.
Check that you already have an Azure account if you want to backup your client or server to Azure.
Check the internet connection on the devices you intend to back up.
Ensure that the person setting up and configuring the MARS MARS agent has administrator privileges local to the server that needs to be secured.
Create a Recovery Services vault
The Recovery Services vault is a management structure that holds recovery points over time. It also gives an interface for backup-related tasks. This includes making backups on demand, performing restores, and creating backup policies.
To establish the Recovery Services vault:
Log into your Azure subscription on Azure's portal. Azure Portal.
Look for a backup center within the Azure portal. Azure portal, then go on to the Backup Center dashboard.
- Choose +Vault from the Overview tab.
- Choose Recovery Services vault > Continue.
- Once you have entered the data after you've provided the information, choose Review and create.
- If you're ready to create your Recovery Services vault, select the option to make.
- It could take a long time to build its-recovery Services vault. Check the status notifications within the Notifications area in the top-right corner of the website. After the vault is set up, it will be visible on the listing of Recovery Services vaults. If you're not able to find your locker, click "Refresh."
