iBase and Power BI

    Hi all,

Is anyone using Power BI in conjunction with iBase for dashboarding, additional insights etc? It's something we've briefly explored in the past but are looking at revisiting it and would be interested in any good practice or lessons learnt from those that have already gone down this path.

    Thanks,

    Ian Callaghan

    Hi Ian,
Not that I'm aware of.  But iBase is an SQL database, so you should be able to plug any BI software on it.

It mainly depends on what type of dashboards the customers want.
As there is no standard iBase DB structure, each customer will have its own DB structure (and quite often more than one DB structures).
It will also depends on the type and volume of data in the iBase DB.

So, I believe that the answer to your questions is "Yes, of course".
But 99.99% of the work will be on the BI side. The iBase SQL database is just another data source.
We (IBM i2) can of course help to explain the overall internal structure of the SQL Server used by iBase.

Just one very important thing to keep in mind : The iBase SQL Server can only be accessed in Read-Only mode by outside tools.
So, as long as Power BI (or any other BI tool) only reads from the SQL Server iBase DB, that's fine.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Ian,

Yes, we've used PowerBI to get further insights from iBase. You can read more here: https://s-branch.co.uk/i2-ibase-dashboards-with-powerbi-unlock-your-data/

You would need a good understanding of your iBase security set-up and the underlying table structure; both of which S-branch can help you with. You may also look at creating a staging database where you can write and store views that point at your iBase database. This will keep any of your code away from the iBase SQL database.

Happy to talk it through with you in more detail when we do your upgrade.

    Kind Regards,
