What if an attacker could manipulate time? It's a concept that hasn't received much exploration...until now. On November 11, 2021, X-Force Red Global Hardware Hacking Lead, Adam Laurie (a.k.a. Major Malfunction), will present a keynote at Black Hat Europe. Adam will discuss the potential impact of manipulating time.

Imagine if you were investigating an incident, and what you thought were the timestamps of when certain events occurred, were in reality timestamps from two weeks prior. The inaccurate evidence would hamper the investigation, and potentially give attackers more time to achieve their goals. That's one example of how time manipulation can affect security processes.

In his talk, Adam also discusses how communication protocols and networks could be affected, and the types of attacks criminals could execute. As he points out, there is currently no way to identify a 'real' time signal from a spoofed one, which makes an attack difficult to detect.
