I think people need to rethink how they get good IT jobs. Sure you have the cattle drive of graduate HS, spend tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars on a college degree and throw in some certifications. Only to toss your resume into the lottery of pick me to an HR person who has no IT experience. That usually results in at least a decade of debt paying for something that gives you little value to getting an IT sector job. I do not have a college degree on my resume but do have many certifications (self-taught) other than a couple my job paid for.
My suggestion for anyone starting out is NOT to go to college for IT. You can learn more through self-taught certifications or boot-camps. Skip the debt.
If you're in an area that seems to require a degree, then attend a college part-time and use it for nothing other than to find an internship at a great company you want to work for. Find out who the IT manager is and offer to work as an intern for minimum wage or nothing at all. Tell them that you believe you're valuable but also understand you have little to no applied knowledge in the field that you're a hard worker and teachable. This is a business transaction, that it will take a period of months for a return on investment for the training they'd invest in you and that you only ask that they re-evaluate your wage in an agreed time period (6 months to a year). Are you so cocky to think that you deserve a high paying job straight out of college with no practical skills in the position you're applying for? Employer/employee is a business transaction and when you don't have much to offer by way of practical skills then don't ask for much.
I was an IT operations manager for a contracting company for years. I oversaw a 24x7 helpdesk for many clients, deskside support and a networking team. Most companies have a 'way' of doing things and don't care that you just graduated from college and want to tell me all the things you know and how much of an expert college made you. The best employees I ever hired were recent graduates from HS, self-learning a certification and told me they didn't know much but they were teachable and willing to put in the sweat equity. It is much easier to get a job while you have a job and much easier to get more money when you have decent experience in your resume.
