Hello all
I read a very interesting article today by Jennifer Gregory, on the IBM Security Intelligence forum (link below
1).
She recalls the situation in 2017 when the WannaCry attack happened on computers worldwide, catching 300 organisations unexpectedly and putting situations such as patient healthcare in danger.
The lesson learned from WannaCry was that computers should have up-to-date operating systems and patching to ensure they had minor upgrades on a regular basis.
Some of you may have experienced malware or other problems on mobile devices. You may know that Google for example has made a significant amount of investment in the last few years, in ensuring that Android devices are better protected. Did you know that Google Play (as an app on your Android device) has a feature called Google Play Protect, which scans your device in real-time for threats as you install new apps? For more information see below (
2). In addition there is a web page for Android protections called the "Android Security Center" (
3).
Organisations that take security seriously know that software needs protection - and that includes operating systems. Your computer most likely now has a firewall protection such as Windows Defender (
4) - which also provides anti-virus protection - or an anti-virus client from any of the reputable providers.
If you're looking for anti-malware and anti-virus protection for mobile devices, you could do worse than looking at IBM Trusteer (available within the IBM Security family of products) (
5).
Many of you will agree that we can no longer just 'sit and wait' in complacency for the next threat or attack, now we have to pro-actively seek configurations and products which assist with our security efforts. For example, IBM MaaS360 Cloud Extender is now protected by an additional layer of security using Akamai to prevent DDOS attacks and other such unwanted intrusions. If you have Cloud Extender installed then you would do well to review your networking settings for your CE server by verifying the networking system requirements have been updated (
6).
People managing iOS devices will be happy to learn that Apple have a whole section of their website dedicated to platform-level security for iOS (
7) and MacOS (
8) .
Here's hoping the spookiness you experience at work is limited to the decorations in your office!
Happy Hallowe'en all...
