It depends on what you are trying to do. Matt is right you can enroll and enforce policies on versions of OS X, but you need to make sure that the policy you are distributing is supported by the older OS (you can check the versions on the actual configuration with the gray boxes on the right). However, if you want to use configurator to enforce DEP you are out of luck. Used machines cannot be added back into DEP with configurator (at least that is the current state of things).

We definitely support older mac versions - there just is no need (or possibility) to "supervise" them. They can enroll and take advantage of the full set of MacOS MDM features without any additional steps required to prepare them

Thanks for the info Matt. But I am confused. It sounds like ABM will facilitate some controls in MaaS for New Macbooks later this year but are you saying there is little to no functionality in MaaS to control an older MacBook? And are you also saying Apple Configurator will not push a supervisor profile to any MacBook?

Hi Mitch,
MacOS "Supervision" isn't like traditional iOS supervision - It's relatively recent (I think maybe they introduced the idea of it in 10.15) & it doesn't come with a laundry list of separate features. I don't think there is really anything MDM specific until Big Sur comes out later this year. Unlike iOS, macOS devices can't be supervised in AC2. They have to be enrolled via the ABM/ASM deployment programs. Your client will be able to procure the new Macs, enroll them, and take advantage of all the features in the portal policy with no extra configuration required.

I have a customer looking to purchase some used Macbooks with a need to set stringent controls on them from MaaS360. Since they are used, we are aware that the Apple Configurator would have to be used to get the Supervisor profile installed. However there are no real metrics in the MaaS dashboard outlining what functionality and support is actually available in MaaS for these laptops.
Can someone point me to a knowledge base article for this info?
