  • 1.  Android Enterprise Settings - Keep WiFi on

    Posted Mon November 23, 2020 11:10 AM
I am having trouble finding settings in Android Enterprise settings to keep wifi on, and not let users turn it off.  Under normal Device Settings, this was under "Restrictions | Network Settings | Enforce Wi-Fi is always on", however this doesnt exist on enterprise.  I found the following article, and assume this setting would keep it on, but I cant figure out how to apply it.  I tired under "Android Enterprise Settings | Security | Advanced Settings | Configure Global Settings", but I'm not quite sure how to apply the settings.  I tired the below (and tried it the opposite way around) and that did not seem to work.  Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi Ben,

I would suggest a combination of settings in the AE policy to get the best results.
Allow Wifi should be yes, of course
Allow Mobile Network Configuration - set to 'no' this will prevent users from changing the settings
Wi-Fi Timeout - set to "Never" to guarantee that it will continue looking for a connection - use sparingly as it would impact battery life in certain situations
If you are configuring the networks in the policy, I would also suggest using the "Restrict Edit Or Delete" feature in the wifi profile config to prevent it from being removed.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions

Thanks Matt!  I have Allow Wifi set to yes, and Wi-Fi Timeout set to never, however I cant set Allow Mobile Network Config to No because I want users to be able to add their own networks in.  I just want to restrict them from turning the wifi setting off like we could in the older Device Settings.

It appears that this doesn't work in DO mode.  Anyone have any thoughts on how to restrict turning off WiFi on android enterprise?

    Hi Ben,

After consulting the developers guide, it does not appear that Android Enterprise has a 1:1 feature match for what was available in DA around limiting Wifi.  Our policies are up-to-date with the current feature set.  Are you utilizing a single manufacturer for the devices in your environment?  If so, I can see if there is maybe an OEMconfig policy available.

That's good news - the KNOX Service Plugin app appears to have the setting you require, and it does not seem to require their premium licensing.

If you're unfamiliar with OEMConfig it's basically a series of apps from different manufacturers that can add layers of features on top of the Android Enterprise settings.

For this feature you'll need to add the KNOX Service Plugin app to your catalog and enable the Configurations tab

Once this is enabled, you'll have to scroll down a bit to wifi settings to find what you are looking for.   Distribute the app to a few test devices and let me know how it works out for the models you are using.
