Phone call in kiosk mode in Maas360

  • 1.  Phone call in kiosk mode in Maas360

    Posted Thu July 02, 2020 10:00 AM
    Good afternoon everyone,

I have a lot of tablet samsung galaxy TAB A who are in kiosk mode with all internal applications.
    All works fine.
But now I need to add some galaxy A50 smartphone with the same kiosk mode with internal apps but in addition they need to use the phone application .
What is the best way to do that ?
I saw it's possible to whitelist the phone & contacts application to be visible in kiosk mode but not working for me ....
    Any idea or suggestions ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Have a nice day.
    Pascal.

    Hi Pascal,

Which app IDs are you whitelisting for the phone services? We use checkboxes in the portal for some Google native apps, but oftentimes OEMs such as Samsung replace those with their own versions.  We may need to update policy to reflect that.

    Hi Pascal,

Try adding com.android.phone as well - if that doesn't work, shoot me an email and I'll gather some info so we can determine which is the correct bundle ID.

    Hello Matt,
I have tried with these 3 ones :

    com.android.phone
    com.android.contacts.phone
    com.samsung.android.contacts.phone

But nothing appear in the kiosk mode.

By the way is it possible to use another app for calling issue from the playstor instead of the native app ? If I download it from app store and publish it on my device ?
Thanks for you reply and for your help.
    Have a nice day.
    Pascal.

    Hi Pascal,
you could try to whitelist these two bundle ID's:

    com.samsung.android.dialer
    com.samsung.android.contacts

I had a similar problem on a Samsung Xcover a while back, and if  my memory is right, I believe that made the trick then.

    Pascal,
I found your post and I am I believe having a similar issue with some new Samsung phones where once I have them setup and enrolled, I go into Kiosk mode but there is no phone icon to make phone calls. I only have a needed software icon, Panic Mode, Camera , and a system diagnostics icon.
I think I tried to whitelist the two bundles mentioned by Kjetil that seemed to work for you but I am not sure if I did the whitelisting in he proper location.

It does not seem so as the phones are still not allowing the phone icon to show up when in Kiosk mode.

Would you potentially be able to provide me some guidance or assistance with this?

HI Matt I am well short of being even a  novice app developer or programmer and I am having an issue with the Kiosk Mode of MaaS360 not showing phone icons to make a call. This is an essential function needed by our client. The policies and setup we currently have has worked and does work with the Kyocera phones the client currently has but is not working with the Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro phones I am trying to setup.  The phones are enrolled and the Kiosk Mode launches without a problem and displays the TrackTik software the client needs. It is only having the phone app available that is the issue.

I am having a difficult time trying to find a how to do this within the MaaS360 information, help screens, or in the library information one of the tech support guys sent me this morning.

Any assistance you might be able to provide would be appreciated.

    Hi Brian
    Matt has left the company.
The Dialer app is the 'phone app' which has a different app ID for each manufacturer.
If you look at the options below both should provide you with an opportunity to retrieve the app ID for the manufacturer used.
    - Go into the phone, Setttings, Apps, locate app ID with Dialer in it
    - From a device in the MaaS360 portal, go to Summary > Apps Installed and see if the Dialer app is listed.
Once you have located the Dialer app you should be able to add this to the allow-listed apps in foreground (not background) in the Kiosk /COSU policy.
As the kiosk has to 'recompile' please allow for a few minutes for this to happen once the updated policy 'hits' the device or alternatively you could exit kiosk and restart.
    Best

    Hi Brian,
I got a notification about this since I have answered in this thread earlier.

Have you tried my original suggestion to whitelist these two bundle ID's?

    com.samsung.android.dialer
    com.samsung.android.contacts

In your COSU setup (in the Android Policy -> Android Enterprise Settings) they should be included under 'App IDs for allowed Apps'.

That worked for me and also for Pascal, but it was a couple of years ago. Anyway, if you haven't tried it yet, I suggest you do.

    Kjetil
