I am looking to connect with an experienced IBM Z/z/OS professional who would be willing to serve as a mentor as I pursue entry-level mainframe system administrator and operations positions.
I have completed approximately 100 hours of IBM Z 101 coursework and hands-on labs, along with the IBM Z Xplore Concepts and Advanced levels and numerous extended challenges. My training has included:
• z/OS, JCL, TSO/ISPF, and SDSF
• USS and Linux
• Dataset management and cataloged procedures
• RACF and mainframe security
• CICS, Db2, IMS, and IBM MQ
• Zowe Explorer, storage, networking, and Sysplex concepts
• Job submission, return-code analysis, and troubleshooting
I earned an A.A.S. in Technology and Cybersecurity/Assurance from Delgado Community College and am continuing my bachelor’s degree in Technology at Tulane University.
I am transitioning into technology after approximately 35 years as Principal Tuba of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. My career as a professional symphony musician has required discipline, reliability, teamwork, careful preparation, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. I believe these qualities translate directly to mainframe operations and system administration.
I would especially appreciate guidance concerning real-world z/OS administration, the skills employers expect from entry-level candidates, résumé and interview preparation, and finding opportunities that provide practical experience.
If you are an experienced IBM Z professional willing to offer occasional advice—or if you know someone who might be—I would sincerely appreciate connecting with you.
Thank you,
Robert Nunez
