Power7 Machine "IBM i grace period expired"

  • 1.  Power7 Machine "IBM i grace period expired"

    Posted Fri December 30, 2022 11:21 AM

Have an old machine supporting a couple LPARs which cannot be upgraded, and the server does not have SWMA support...
Getting this message in QSYSOPR message queue:

    Message ID . . . . . . : CPF9E7C Severity . . . . . . . : 90
    Message type . . . . . : Information
    Date sent . . . . . . : 30-12-22 Time sent . . . . . . : 05:58:59

    Message . . . . : IBM i grace period expired.
    Cause . . . . . : The software license grace period for IBM i has expired. A
software license key is required to successfully complete the next initial
    program load (IPL).
Recovery . . . : Contact your IBM marketing representative or IBM business
partner for a new IBM i software license key. Use the Add License Key
Information (ADDLICKEY) command to add the software license key.

Nothing tells me which key is expired.  And I can't IPL the machine or it won't come back up.

And when I do a DSPLICKEY to a file, and run a sql to see the key expirations, I don't see any products that HAVE expiration dates
The dash after the "YES" is the expiration date.  Dash = null value.

Depends on the situation, but the ESS site should have the keys for 7.2.  You shouldn't need SWMA to access the keys.

    Dear Marc

    >>>> Nothing tells me which key is expired. <<<<

The message CAUSE section says about a need for a license key to complete IPL. This means you need to enter a valid license key of IBM i itself - product ID 5770SS1.

    >>>>

INSTALLED EXPIRES GRACE LICPGM LIC_TERM RLS_LVL FEATURE PROC_GRP DESCRIPTION
    YES - 70 5770SS1 V7R2M0 V7R2M0 5050 P10 IBM i
    YES - 0 5770SS1 V7R2M0 V7R2M0 5051 P10 IBM i
    YES - 0 5770SS1 V7R2M0 V7R2M0 5052 P10 IBM i

    <<<<

The number in front of the product ID is the remaining days of grace period. I see zero and 70.  70 means you never use that sw product for the first time yet after installing it without entering a valid key.  In the sample above, zero is for FC5051 and 5052 of 5770SS1 which are processor-based and user-based keys for IBM i OS itself.  You need to enter a valid key for each.   I see zero in a few more lines as well - WDS and IBM i Access.

    >>>> I don't see any products that HAVE expiration dates <<<<

When GRACE PERIOD is indicated, it means you NEVER entered any license key at all before. So, you cannot see any "existing" expiry date which you will see only after a temp key was entered before.

    >>>> And I can't IPL the machine or it won't come back up. <<<<

When temp license key or grace period of IBM i itself expires, it will ask you from the console session in the early stage of IPL process to enter the license key for IPL process to continue.

    >>>> the server does not have SWMA support.. <<<<

Have you ever requested license keys for IBM i 7.2 before for this machine?  If not and without an active SWMA, you are out of luck and cannot get the keys for IBM i 7.2 and all its licensed programs in your machine.

FYI, next time you have any question having to do with IBM i, it would be better to post your quetions in the community group named IBM i Global where there are a thousand members.
