Hi David, I must admit. I've been trying to use this so many times since long. But I find it difficult to understand the concept. Can you please explain for a person like me how it works and what I can expect and not expect from a mailing list..

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Think of the mailing lists as very big group messages with a specific topic.  You send a message to the list and everyone gets it. If someone can contribute to the discussion, they reply to the list.

It's basically a discussion forum via email.

The way I look at this is I rarely look at forums.  The only reason why I'm looking at this forum today is because it sent me an email update about what is going on with it.  Mailing lists tickle you for more frequent participation.  Granted, I automatically put all email from David's lists into a separate folder for each list but I still notice the number of unread messages in each list immediately upon looking in email (which is VERY often).
The midrange-l list never gets ad's and stuff sent as posts, which often happens on LinkedIn groups.
Participation in this list is very well behaved.
I'm not arguing which one is better.  I'm just stating which one seems to get responses faster.
One concern I have with IBM forums is they tend to disappear when IBM migrates to new concepts and all that information is lost.  However I can go to the archives at MIDRANGE-L mailing list archive (midrange.com)  and see posts from the last century.

Apparently another benefit to a mailing list versus these forums is that you don't have to wait until the BDFL approves the message to see it.

What I don't get from Midrange is when you want to post something on a specific group for example Open source how do you do that. You send your new question and Midrange is the one who classify where to post or Am I wrong? some one pls explain to me.

Check out lists.midrange.com.  Basically you subscribe to each list individually.

    For example:

    Using OpenSource

To post a message to all the list members, send email to opensource@lists.midrange.com.

    Using RPG400-L

To post a message to all the list members, send email to rpg400-l@lists.midrange.com.

    Using MIDRANGE-L
To post a message to all the list members, send email to midrange-l@lists.midrange.com.

    Jose:

To post a message to a specific list, you send an email to that list address.

You must be subscribed to the list first.

So, if you want to post to the open source list, after you are subscribed, you would send a message to opensource<at>lists.midrange.com. Make sure you use a good subject for your message.

Similarly, to post to MIDRANGE-L, you would address your message to midrange-l<at>lists.midrange.com.

To see all the available lists, visit https://lists.midrange.com.

    Clear?
