  • 1.  Importing VIOS install images to the HMC from a USB key

    Posted Mon March 14, 2022 10:47 AM
    Hi,

During a recent VIOS build on a pair of E1080 servers with 7063-CR2 HMCs (V10R1M1011) I had an issue importing a VIO server image (3.1.3.14) to the HMC.

I used HMC "Management > Template and OS iImages > VIOS Images > Manage Virtual I/O Server Image > Import New Virtual I/O Server Image > Management Console USB". The image either did not get imported or when it did, it was later rejected by NIMOL with a mount error, obviously due to a format error.

The ISO image was "burned" (dd) to the key using Rufus. (The same USB key works fine when directly mounted via a Power9 server's front USB port.)

Interestingly enough, the most recent documentation (Manage Virtual I/O Server Image Repository) does not even mention USB. So I'm wondering if this is even possible, and if so, how exactly?

    Regards,
    Z

    Hi Zoltan,

Importing the VIOS image from USB is supported function for CR2. I have not used Rufus for ISO burning, need to try that and get back. And also, thank for pointing the missing documentation. We will get it fixed. Thanks!

    Hi Zoltan,

I have internally opened defect to track the Knowledge Center content changes for the USB device support. Also, we found the issue related the failure of VIOS installation from the HMC GUI with the imported image from USB. The fix will be made available in the next service pack.

Mean time, you can install the VIOS using the command line using installios command. And you need to specify the VIOS image location as '/extra/viosimages/<VIOS Image Name>/usbimage.iso'. Hope this helps. Thanks!

Pretty sure I've hit this exact problem as all my levels and errors seem to be the same as originally described here. Will have to try again using the prescribed installios command you mention.

It's possible that the USB key used to import the VIO server image to the HMC may have compatibility issues with the HMC or the VIO server image itself. You could try using a different USB key or a different method of importing the image, such as using the HMC's web interface or a network-based method like FTP or NFS.

It's also worth noting that the VIO server image may need to be in a specific format for it to be compatible with the HMC. You may want to check the documentation for the specific VIO server version you're using to ensure that it's compatible with the HMC version and that it's in the correct format.

If you continue to experience issues, you may want to reach out to IBM support for assistance, as they would be best equipped to help troubleshoot this issue.

I realize it's an old post...but have you tried just copying the iso to the flash drive instead of dd'ing it?
