Scaling up to 5-node cluster in PowerVC 2.0.3

Starting 2.0.3 release, PowerVC enables you to scale a 3-node cluster up to 5 nodes. Please refer to the Installing PowerVC and Hardware and Software requirements topics before you proceed further. You can also find a few other useful topics at the end of this blog.

An Overview

Using PowerVC OpsMgr, you can create a single node or multinode (3 nodes) PowerVC cluster. The cluster can be extended up to 5 nodes. In this blog, we are taking the example of a 3-node PowerVC cluster and demonstrating the procedure to scale it up to a 5-node cluster.

The image below depicts an example of 3-node cluster in place.

Prerequisites to scale up to 5 node cluster:

  • You have created 3 nodes along with one virtual IP (VIP). You can access nodes via virtual IP.
  • All nodes are registered using your RHN subscription.
  • All nodes have required repos (based on your environment RHEL/SLES) installed.
  • All nodes must have the same password.

Health check of services

After PowerVC installation is complete, make sure all services are up and in running state. Run powervc-opsmgr install -c <cluster_name> --validate-install to check the complete health status of all services.

Scale up to 5 node cluster

Provide two more nodes that are identical to the existing node; the nodes must have the same distro or version.

Add node operation is performed on the primary or bootstrap node. Make sure you are logged in to the primary node.

  1. Run powervc-opsmgr addnodes -c <cluster name> -s. The command captures the IP addresses of new nodes and updates inventory for the cluster. PowerVC can be installed on the new nodes.
You can run powervc-opsmgr addnodes -h for details of subcommands regarding adding or replacing nodes.
  2. Provide IP addresses of two more nodes to be added. First, you can provide IP/Hostname and password details of the 4th node and then of the 5th (We already have a 3-node cluster.)

After generation of the inventory file, you can validate the same by running powervc-opsmgr inventory -l command.

Results are displayed for a 5-node PowerVC cluster as shown in the image here.

Conclusion

As you have seen, scaling up a 3-node cluster to 5 node cluster is a simple procedure. Hope you have enjoyed reading this blog. Drop your comments or feedback in the ‘Comments’ section.
