What types of IoT technology do you use around your home?

  • 1.  What types of IoT technology do you use around your home?

I recently bought a Nest which has been fun playing around with this summer - and of course, I'm looking forward to my bill going down. I also really want to get the Philips Hue bulbs once my budget allows it. I'm interested to hear what other people have used around their home and what you now "can't live without"?

Right now I just have the Philips Hue system (it is indeed expensive), but I'm still using the stock app to control it. I've got a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B running Raspbian and Home Assistant, although I still haven't taken the time to sit down and configure it to work with the lights. The plan is to automate it turning on as the sun sets, as well as respond based on whether or not myself or my brother is at home by sensing which devices are connected to the router (running DD-WRT).

I've heard so many good things about Raspberry Pi 2 Model B - you'll have to post when you get it set up. Sounds like it will be a pretty comprehensive system. I was excited to look into the new Home app in Apple's iOS 10, but turns out it doesn't integrate with my Nest. Better luck next time, i guess...

I was at my brother's house last weekend and he had the new Amazon Dash button. He got his for Red Bull (haha). Has anyone else bought one? It's this physical button you buy from Amazon and it orders a certain product. Once you're out of the product (like Red Bull), you just push the button and an order is placed for more! So when he hit his Red Bull button, it flashed signifying it was connecting to Wi Fi, then turned green to signify that his order for Red Bull had been placed. So crazy. I can't imagine having them all over the house.

I actually own two of them. They're pretty darn convenient. When I get down to the last trashbag or roll of TP, I just push the button and more arrives at my door. Prices are hard to beat, too. They make an IoT version now to tinker with, probably since they realized a ton of people were buying them just to use the technology itself.

That sounds so nice! A great way to deal with the stuff you hate having to buy. I feel like I always forget to buy dish soap - that'd be a great thing to have a button for. I didn't know about the IoT button. Looks really cool! Also read that the battery goes out after about 1,000 clicks, and there's no way to recharge or replace the battery. Maybe you can get a button to order a new button. Ha!

I have a wi-fi crock pot.  I kid you not.  It is ver usefull for things like chicken and pork that onlu need a couple of hourse to cook.

I did read a funny story about an English man who bought a WI-fi Kettle and it took him 11 hourse to make a cup of tea!

So let's hope IBM can make things smoother than that!

Now there's a product I never thought I'd need! My mom gave me an older Crock Pot that still works great, but it's a bit small so I was looking at getting a second one for larger meals or potlocks. That might have to go on the wishlist.

Oh my gosh, I know what I'm adding to my Christmas list this year!!! It would actually be nice for dishes that only cook for 4 hours that I want to have ready for when I get home from work. I guess there's also they delayed-start crockpots... but I think I'd be able to convince my husband to get the wifi one. :-)

Also, that tea kettle story is hilarious. I would never have the patience!!

I have a friend with chickens, and they lost one the other day, becasue the heat lamp burned out at night,

I think a simple light sensor concected to an Arduino with a GSM chip could easily be set up to send a text when the bulb blows.

There are so many possibilities.  Here is a pack of 37 sesnors for $27!  lots of potential there.

If we add an arduino or raspberry Pi and a commuications device, we can send all kinds of data to the cloud.

Rob - that definitely sounds like a reasonable solution. Maybe your friend could set up the text notification system and then have an have an Amazon Dash button to order a new one... Hehehe. :-)

I saw a commercial over the weekend for programmable window treatments (blinds) that adjusted based on the time of the sunrise/sunset. Looked awesome, but can't imagine what the prices on those would be. Prices on regular window treatments are already through the roof. Maybe once the prices on some of these technologies start going down then I can start buying them.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the current issue with IoT. You either pay a hefty premium for systems that are packaged nicely and Just Work, or spend a ton of time and effort putting together DIY systems. Hopefully soon we'll start to see the price come down on the consumer items. I'd love to continue spreading my Hue's reach to the entire apartment, but $20/bulb for white ($60 for color) is still pretty cost-prohibitive, at least up front.

Thank you! The 37 -in- 1 sensor module kit looks like fun...and it comes with an instructional (tutorial) CD! It reminds me of the movie about Steve Jobs; when he sold computer boards instead of a complete package of ready to go, plug and play, computers.

I am using only a Google Home Mini but I had a lot problems due to my internet supplier. I got it working and I absolutely fell in love. Checking temperature, daily updates about traffic, daily reminders and even an alarm is great. I would like for google home to check how many views my site gets but I have no idea how to do that. Maybe I have to write an app for it? Some of you can help me with it?

Anyways, I love google home and I think some you will love it too.

We use Amazon Alexa and every room has a Dot unit plus the main one in a central area.  Lights are through LIFX which is far superior in my opinion over Phillips.  We have motion detectors that are programmed via Samsung Smart Things (which is really the power behind the scenes) allowing routines to run that manage a lot of things such as the house being in different modes like Away which will light the house up like a beacon if we are gone and motion detectors are triggered at night, low level lighting in different zones of the house at night when we're home and I do something like walk from the bedroom to my home office, and a lot of other programming.  Even conveniences like turning on a portable heater in the master bath by voice command on those cold mornings!
