  • 1.  How do I monitor a MQ RDQM cluster?

    Hi All,

Given a basic MQ v9.2 RDQM deployment with 3 nodes,  what IBM product(s) do I need to monitor and visualise the queue manager's objects like channels and queue depth?

The products used to monitor and visualise the queue manager's objects like channels and queue depth don't need to change just because you are using RDQM. You can continue to use the same products that you would have previously used to monitor a single instance stand alone queue manager.

If you want to monitor the status of the RDQM cluster itself, you can only do so by issuing commands on the machines locally, so standard MQ monitoring tools that use the command server cannot help you there.

What tools do you currently use? Also, your question explicitly asks for "IBM products". Is there any particular reason why the tools need to be from IBM? There is a large and vibrant MQ community of vendors supplying configuration and monitoring tools for MQ. Are you able to consider those too?

    Cheers,
    Morag

I doubt it is so straightforward.  Monitoring solutions usually rely on an agent on the node(s) or a remote agent.  I foresee RDQM creating some challenges for older products like ITCAM for Messaging that deploys an agent on each node.  I am interested to hear from the community how they are monitoring their RDQM Queue Managers today.

I am interested in exploring other products to monitor/alert/visualise all the IBM Middleware products (ie MQ, ACE and API Connect) in a single pane of glass.

Undoubtedly, nothing is ever as straightforward as it should be :-)

For monitoring solutions that used an agent, I would expect it to run as a SERVICE object using CONTROL(QMGR) if there needs to be only one of them running where the queue manager is live. Alternatively, I expect agent based monitoring tools might also be happy if you run an agent on every machine that the queue manager could be running on, and cover it that way. Certainly a question to ask of the manufacturer of the tools doing this.

For monitoring solutions that use a client MQ connection to the queue manager, then they can either connect to the floating IP address that will likely be configured with your RDQM cluster, or if you haven't got one of those (it is optional), then you just need to use an MQ Client connection technology that can cope with different possible IP addresses for the queue manager such as a CCDT or a comma-separated CONNAME.

Since I count as a tools vendor rather than a user in this regard, I will leave others now to give you their experiences.

    Cheers,
    Morag

    Hi all,

Like Morag I count in this regards as a vendor, but I will say we have built a number of monitoring solutions for MQ for a number of years, and have also recently been helping customers with the uniqueness of designing monitoring options for the newer HA options for MQ including RDQM (and others for containerized options in Rancher).  The concepts are similar, if different in their implementation.  Little works 'out of the box', but we do include monitoring as a core practice area, and would be happy to discuss options.

Hi Colin,  answering as a vendor -- Avada Software's Infrared360 gives you 1 pane of glass to monitor and administer  MQ, IIB/ACE, Datapower, WAS, Microservices, Kafka.   There are no agents needed to deploy it and unlimited user licenses.   Feel free to contact anyone via the website chat widget (lower right) : http://www.avadasoftware.com

Slightly different tack on the same question please - as you are all so knowledgeable here :-) Multi-instance used to check for QM health before moving it. Does RDQM do the same or does it just check whether the network is running ? Do I need to go create some more scripts (or buy one of your awesome products of course ;-)
    thanks !

Using REST API it is very easy :
    - Enable Gateway qmgr with web Browser
    - Hit the RDQM qmgr to monitor
        - Qmgr status
        - queues
        - channels
        - etc

    Coming to RDQM :
    - Push all logs to Elastic
       - pacemaker
       - RDQM.ERROR
       - Qmgr Logs

    And finally for Event monitoring,
     - Use the sample program to convert events into JSON
     - Use a log analytic tool like Elastic

You would not need any other agent or vendor program to monitor.

    Hi Colin,
You can use Nastel's software to monitor and visualise RDQM queue manager's objects like channels and queue depth. It's your choice how you view this i.e. you can view a replicated queue manager as the same one or a different one. It can also manage it and provide end to end tracking and MI.
    Hope that helps,
    Sam
