NOOB here so please be kind :-)

My QueueManager is successfully talking to the remote site, but I was just digging into 'runmqsc' and I don't see a channel object defined, but it works:

DIS CHANNEL(TO.A)     WebSphere MQ object TO.A not found

    But:  DIS CHS(TO.A)
    CHANNEL(TO.A)                  CHLTYPE(CLUSSDR)
    CONNNAME(x.x.x.x(7719))  CURRENT
    RMQNAME(A)                       STATUS(RUNNING)
    SUBSTATE(MQGET)             XMITQ(A.PROJECT)

Is my QueueManager in a bad state?  Anything I would/should do to fix it?

Because this is a cluster channel it can be automatically created and therefore no channel object will exist. The channel definition can be viewed in this case using the DISPLAY CLUSQMGR command. This is normal, there is no problem, you have nothing to fix.
