    Posted Thu May 21, 2020 03:29 PM

Hi everyone! I'd like to get to know who is part of the IBM Z student community - would you mind responding here and introducing yourself?

I'm Julie, from Connecticut, USA. I am currently working with AngelHack, and working on making sure that this years' Master the Mainframe competition is a great experience and that the learning continues year-round. I'm a full-time software engineer, and I also love to teach programming. I don't have much experience with Mainframe development (yet!) but I'm taking courses and working on some badges. I participated in MTM as a student in 2014 - it was fun, but I didn't keep going, and I'd like to pick it back up again! I spend my free time making crafts, going running on trails, and kayaking.

I'm happy to talk about writing software, finding a tech job, tech entrepreneurship, learning paths, and problem solving! Drop me a message if you need anything here :)

    I'll kick this off!

I'm Lella, one of the five million students affected by the unexpected announcement of GCSE exam cancellations in the UK. I've been using the realms of time I now have on my hands, to reignite my passion for technology which took a back seat as I concentrated on my studies.

I want to be involved in closing the digital skills gap while seeking to break existing stereotypes surrounding the industry. I benefit from the support of my strong female mentors (like @Melissa Sassi!) and aspire to follow in their footsteps. I enjoy engaging in tech-related events - most recently participating in CodeTheCurve & am proud to be an IBM Z Global Student Hub Senator - allowing me to bring the ideas of my generation to the table!

Outside of the tech sphere, I enjoy broadening my outlook through travelling, cooking with my little sister, practicing yoga and singing in my school Chapel Choir!

Hello Julie & everyone else! I am Mark Gunderson. I am a mainframer! I have worked on the mainframe for over 35 years and currently handle responsibilities of Systems Programmer, Database Administrator, Security Administrator, Storage Administrator, System Administrator, and Data Analyst. I have also been teaching Computer Science and Information Systems at our local Community College for 11 years. I live in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah. The Salt Lake Valley encompasses the entire Salt Lake County of about 20 small cities of which Salt Lake City is the main city and the capital city of the State of Utah. I actually work for the State of Utah in the Department of Technology Services (DTS). I still have much to learn about the mainframe even though I have worked with it for 35 years. There is so much technology involved that it is impossible to learn it all. I am hoping to pick up a lot of new things or learn how to do things better than I am already doing.

    Hello Julie et al!!

I am Karan and I worked in US as an Energy Efficiency Coordinator in Wyoming, USA for last 8 years. I emigrated to Canada last Halloween have been been working in logistics first in Amazon and now in Nordstrom. The stay-at-home situation worked like a blessing in disguise for I was made aware of the COBOL importance in the real world. One small article about IBM starting a public forum along with my curiosity and my persistent determination led me to make an important decision of making Mainframe my near future career.

So far I have been able to complete MTM 2019 successfully. I have also been attending unofficial training sessions with a group of students from around the world, wherein I have completed a detailed training on COBOL and currently JCL is in progress.

I wish to obtain more badges/credentials so any guidance from my experienced peers will be grateful. I am here to be an active part of discussions mainly to learn and contribute as and when possible.

Thank you for letting me be a part of this awesome group. I am looking forward to learning more about you guys as well as learn from you all.

    Regards,

    Julie,

I met an industry professional from India on the OMP forum named Uday Prasad. He volunteered to share his knowledge and spend an hour or two each day to teach basic concepts about COBOL, JCL, and DB2. We ended up becoming a group of 15-20 individuals from around the world including beginners or veterans who wanted a refresher and we have been studying regularly with him.

Unfortunately we wont have a formal certification but I am hoping to use the knowledge, grow on it and gain some kind of industry recognized credentials or badges to prove my worth and enter the world of Cobol/MF as Application programmer.

    Greetings!
I'm Prithiraj a student of Electronics and Communication Engineering from India. I like exploring new technologies and time like this is like opportunity in disguise that has helped me expanding my exploration ground.
I had been attached with IBM since MTM-2019 and to be honest, it was my first international level competition. After that, I tried to attend all of their workshops and webinars. Aside mainframe I currently took interest in Web Development and App Development.
When I am not exploring new technologies I like to read book (actually quite at lot 😁) and drawing.

Tech is my passion and thus I will always strive to use it to make the world an even better place. Apart from telecoms I'm a fullstack developer. Currently, I find myself using node js a lot. For leisure I like to watch movies, listen to awesome music or read something (the philosophical kind). I even do a bit of forex trading.

I learnt about the MTM as I was taking part in the competition back in 2019. It is therefore an honor to serve as a zambassador and an even greater honor to serve with all of you. I hope to learn a lot from you.

My greatest interest right now is cyber security, more so because in telecommunication the security of systems is of utmost importance.

But how to start off between our programming courses and a serious job? Do you already have experiences with first entry level challenges and job opportunities for novice programmers?

    Hi everyone!
I'm Marwa, from Tunisia, north Africa. I am a full-time PhD student in computer science, working on  the co-location attack problem in the cloud IaaS. I like  programming and problem solving so much. I don't have  experience with Mainframe development, but I plan to work on it in my free time.
Also, I  like IA specially constraint programming and machine learning. This interest started during my MSC in automated reasoning systems.  I spend my free time watching series, attending soft skills or entrepreneurship workshops and having fun with family and friends. But I am recently starting to have some daily walks to be healthier and happier.
I have fall with this program when I have been searching for a PhD fellowship so checking the offers of IBM and in parallel I have heard Melissa Sassi talking about it on Facebook.
I am thrilled to belong to such a significant community  :)

    Hi Everyone,

I'm Richard from Ontario, Canada. I currently work as a part time Data Scientist and pursuing a Masters in Analytics at McGill starting August. Before that I studied Computer Science and Economics. I'm interested in visualizing Machine Learning model decisions/outputs. I don't have much experience with Mainframe. I've used some IBM products such as Cognos, and recently the IBM Blockchain Platform. I like learning about startups, NLP techniques, Python Data visualization frameworks (Anyone know how to use Dash?) and blockchain SaaS tools! Nice meeting you all

    Hello!

I'm Kareena and I am so excited to start my work as a ZAmbassador and help people, as well as talking to them about IBM Z skills. I am very enthusiastic about technology; I am especially interested in looking at bridging the gap between students and technology. As well as this, I am interested in helping to make technology more accessible for everyone.

I cannot wait to learn more about the Mainframe, as I have really enjoyed the Master the Mainframe competition. Apart from tech, I love reading, history and playing (and listening) to music on my piano, guitar, ukulele, or saxophone.

    Hello, World!

Im Alex! I study CS + Engineering at Folsom Lake College. I am in year 3 and I plan to transfer to a competitively ranked research university either in the US or Switzerland. I've coded, built robots, made my own website, and am always learning. I love school and to prove it, my room is full of blackboards that I do math on or use to put my notes up. I think science is art and not only that, a form of communication. Giving people technical skills enables them to create incredible things. Given our circumstances with the COVID-19 Pandemic affecting people internationally and the recent deadly fires in California and in Pakistan. We need as many digitally literate and skilled people as possible. I stand by IBM's mission to build the most diverse and talented workforce in the world. Coming to talks by Ginny Rometty and hearing about how her family went from living off of food stamps to her attending Northwestern and getting her first job really spoke to me. Knowing that IBM's Executive Chairwoman believes in hard work and that talent can come from any human being regardless of who they are or where they come from motivates me to learn. It motivates me to learn insatiably to not only finish my formal education and training but to pursue practical industry training such as that offered through IBM's Master the Mainframe.  We must strive to close the digital skills gap by opening up to the world for growth. In her words, "Why limit ourselves". I am grateful and honored to be an IBM ZAmbassador and hope to inspire my student community to innovate and learn.

Here's something I built. Hope it inspires you!

Here's also what I mean when I say my room is full of notes and blackboards!

    I love school <3

    That's great.

Hello, my name is Juan, I am from Maracaibo - Venezuela, I am a systems engineer oriented to the development of software as integration of services (Things with many APIs) participate in the mainframe 2017, do not complete the first part (the truth I did not understand what I was doing hahaha) but years passed and I began to see the step by step of many things about TI.

In 2020 I participated in the mainframe and was a finalist. I think it was only me who represented my country in the competition but due to time issues I did not manage to complete the final challenge,

My best advice for everything is Never stop learning no matter the age or what you are doing.
