The IBM z/VSE operating system provides an efficient and reliable mainframe environment for small and medium businesses worldwide. It is still in widespread use, also due to its lower hardware requirements compared to the IBM z/OS operating system.
Over time however, IBM z/OS and IBM z/VSE developed in different directions and with different speed of innovation. And while IBM z/VSE customers successfully run transactional and batch workloads on IBM z/VSE – a change was needed to be able to keep pace with implementing additional customer requirements.
In 2021, IBM Corporation announced that it had entered a source-code agreement with 21st Century Software (21CS), a long standing IBM partner in development with various IBM products in the IBM zSystems space. This allowed 21CS to release its own VSEn 6.3 operating system in May 2022 - along with most of the VSE add-on products.
This is great news for VSE, as 21CS will not only maintain VSEn with a large team of specialists and developers – but also work on future releases with new functionality! At the same time, given the possibility for customers to move forward with 21CS VSEn, IBM Corporation announced its retreat from IBM z/VSE development, with an end-of-service (EOS) announcement for IBM z/VSE 6.2 already in September 2023.
This fast-pace IBM z/VSE transition to 21CS VSEn can be overwhelming and naturally raised lots of questions.
