Session 1: IBM z16 and zFuture strategy & roadmap – Dr. Christian Jacobi

Dr. Christian Jacobi is an IBM Fellow and CTO for System Architecture and Design for IBM zSystems. He has over 20 years of experience in developing IBM zSystems and IBM POWER microprocessors and systems. Christian is highly experienced in micro-architecture, logic design, performance analysis, verification, development and hardware and software co-optimization. Dr. Jacobi was the Chief Architect for the z15 and z16 microprocessors and is currently working on next generation IBM zSystems.

Session 2: Metrics, Log, and Trace – The Data Behind Mobile to Mainframe Observability – Daniel Wiegand

Understanding the operational health of your enterprise evolves as the digital transformation continues.   As the volumes of data generated by your environment continues to grow exponentially, new AI driven solutions are required to fully understand your complex hybrid applications.   Getting the right data, to the right place, at the right time will help you gain observability into your hybrid environments including IBM zSystems.

Dan Wiegand is the Senior Product Manager for IBM zSystems AIOps, bringing visibility and insight into IBM Z.  Today, his is responsible for the IBM zSystems monitoring portfolio and anomaly correlation with IBM z/OS Worklaod Interaction Navigator.  In his 24 years at IBM, he has performed multiple roles across development, architecture, and offering strategy for both IBM zSystems and IBM Cloud solutions. Dan has an extensive background in IT Service Management.

Session 3: From Metal to Cloud in two Days – The ESP program journey to a successful on-prem cloud on Z

Cloud on Z is real and can be easy! In 2020 our business partner Vicom Infinity nominated us to be part of the z15 T02 ESP program. With that came the idea of showcasing our z/VM modernization strategy by demonstrating that we could go „From Metal to cloud in two days“. This session is about the two day journey of producing a fully functional z/VM cluster and on-prem Linux cloud by levering  a solid, high-performing web server combined with our zPRO Cloud and Host Management product and cloning over 150 servers in less than 20 minutes. Can your software do that?

Speakers:

Rich Smrcina & James Vincent

Rich started his IT career in 1979 and worked his way up as Operator, Programmer and then Systems Programmer. His worked on VSE, VM, Optional Products and Third Party Products. After many years of experience in various jobs and companies,

Rich joined Velocity Software in 2010, currently enjoying a variety of tasks, development, customer training, and R&D. Rich is responsible for zALERT and zPORTAL, and maintains the internal z/OS and z/VSE systems.

James Vincent has been building and supporting large z/VM and virtual Linux farms since 2005 and working with z/VM since 1985. James currently is working for Velocity Software as a Sr. Systems Architect developing zPRO, their premier Cloud and z/VM Manager for z Systems. He enjoys kayaking, reading, action/sci-fi shows, and sipping a fine Bourbon in his spare time.

Session 4: State-of-the-market: Open-Source Software and Mainframe Application Development – Jeff Cherrington

Maintaining the vitality of the IBM System Z ecosystem requires maintaining pace with advances in technology, including the use of open-source offerings for application development. Hear about the state of open-source software available natively on z/OS, the role open-source Zowe plays in the future of mainframe applications, and data privacy and audit compliance issues to consider when incorporating open-source into your application development tool set.

Jeff Cherrington is Vice President, Product Management, Infrastructure Modernization at Rocket Software, a close IBM business & technology partner for decades. He has held similar positions with large enterprises including First Data, Bank One / JPMorgan Chase, CA, and ASG Systems, with a great deal of focus on applying technology for protection & privacy and the realities of regulatory compliance and audit.
