RBD/EGL trial

Does IBM still offer a trial for RBD ?
I tried to register for a trial here: "https://www.ibm.com/products/rational-business-developer"
but this link does not seem to work.
We would like to test generating COBOL/CICS code with EGL.

    It works for me.
You have to register to get an IBM Id first.

Exactly what happens when you try to use the link?

After logoin with IBMID it seems to hang saying "Processing your request".
Maybe it has to do with cookies. I'll try from a fresh browser.

    Hi Dan
I just tried the link and it seems to work now. So try again.
I myself have used the EGL to COBOL/CICS and other generation options for many years - both for IBM internally and for customer projects. It works great.
As you want to try out the COBOL/CICS options I assume you have the z/OS platform as target platform.
For that to function I just want you be aware that there are 2 parts in that:
    - you must on your personal laptop install the Rational Business Developer (RBD) package - an Eclipse based IDE with EGL functionality added. I assume you will get access to that in the trial process mentioned in your post.
    - on your target z/OS platform you or a tech guy must install the counterpart - an EGL Generation Server, that will communicate with your RBD when you activate the Generate option. The Server task receives the generated COBOL source code from the RBD IDE and compiles to load modules. This compilation process can be customized if needed.
So - you will need to work on both your own laptop and on z/OS to do this trial.
But - I am sure it will be worth the work.
best of luck with the trial

    Hi Dan
I guess you will be a fan of EGL, when you have tried it.
I have used it for many years - also the previous products - VAG and CSP, for customer projects and also IBM Internal projects.
Its great for building cross platform applications, and for target platform z/OS, where you can build batch/CICS/MQ/web applications in a language that is easy to learn.
I have tried the trial link above, and it seems to work now, so I guess its just a 'new year' hick'up.

I just want to make you aware of, that there are 2 parts in testing EGL when the target platform is z/OS:

    - you have to install the Rational Business Developer v9.7 on your laptop. Its an Eclipse based IDE, with EGL functionality added. Also git is included if needed. The trial is a full version with all features active, you will just be notified at each startup.
    - in addition you or a tech guy will have to install the EGL Generation Server component on the z/OS platform. Your RBD IDE will connect to the server task, when you "Generate" the EGL code, and will hand-over Cobol source code, and the server task will compile that code - based on template compile jcl, that you are able to tailor to your needs.

Have fun, and be prepared to be 'hooked' by the EGL language :-)

    Hello,
Thanks for the very useful info.
Our z/OS platform is based on IBM ZD&T and currently we run the z/OS 2.4 ADCD that is packaged with ZD&T.
Can you point me to the doc for configuring the "EGL Generation Server " on z/OS ?
    Cheers...Dani

    Hi Dan
you can find the latest version of he "Program Directory" manual for the product "IBM Rational COBOL Runtime Guide for zSeries V6.0.1 - (product number 5655-R29)" here:

    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/SSMQ79_9.5.1/com.ibm.etools.egl.zos.server.doc/pdf/com.ibm.etools.egl.zos.server.doc.pdf

Start reading chapter 10 - that gives an overview of what the build server does.

Hi Dan!  I hope you got your trial working.  I just installed mine here and I'm starting to work on Rich UI projects with the IBM i.  I did a lot of this many years back, so I hope to get it's like riding a bike. :)

You will definitely hear a lot from me, Dev!  I need to get back up to speed on the basics, and then I plan to embark on a pretty ambitious development project to modernize some old green screen applications.  As always the first hurdle is just to get some examples running.  Then I'll be off to the races!
