A bit of a dated response, but from my experience, out of the box, the installation was fairly simple.  Using the sample config works as long as you kept to the defined directory structure.  I think the trickiest part initially, was getting the network configuration done.  I initially tried to install on a VM, so I can use snapshots and such.  Ubuntu desktop was my OS.  I used desktop because you need a 3270 session for the console, so I used X3270 and added that to my startup script for zdt.  I couldn't get network connectivity beyond the VM host.  Not sure why even though it was given a static IP on my local network.  Eventually gave up and put Ubuntu on the bare metal.  Network connectivity worked fine in that configuration.

Once it's up and running it does need some TLC.  For one, you do need to manage your system log since it will fill up rather quickly.  I basically used the Linux host to run cron jobs to manage that.  You can just have a cron job ftp a JCL stream to the internal reader to run a job.  However you want to manage your logs, you can start the process from there.

From a base system standpoint, the hardest think will be when you want to update the distribution.  You need to take into consideration any customizations you make and how they carry over to the updated ADCD release.  I've basically defined some dasd volumes and just carry them over to the new release and do what I would need to with the datasets that are stored on them.  There could be a lot of detail here depending how deep you get into your customizations.  The documentation I've seen says to uses the USER.** datasets.  But know that they are replaced in each distribution, so you'll have to have a way to overlay the new with the old.

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Hi Mark,
This is Sandra from NW now with NFCU
IBM not communicating with people who applied is a real pain
I applied, sent in my paperwork back in February and then silence.   emailed my contact and he's no longer with IBM.

How are you liking the learners edition?
it seems fairly complete compared to the enterprise zD&T but limited GP which is disappointing.   however I did find that memory really helped more than processor
