Dan, in general IDz tries to allow updating either the client or the host first. This is described in more detail here: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/ibm-developer-zos-backwardforward-compatibility
Of course there are times when a new feature is added to the client and in order to make use of it the host must also be updated, but for general IDz functionality having different versions on the client and host should work just fine.

We do. It is sometimes hard to coordinate the host pieces with the IDZ pieces as sometimes new host pieces are incompatible with what is on the workstations and we cannot upgrade mainframe and workstations simultaneously.

We are installing ADFZ 4.0.1, it has no program directory and IBM support said they don't support the bundle, only the individual products. The bundle came with the common components 1.9.0, fault analyzer 15.1, application performance analyzer 15.1 and the developer kit. They all have separate program directories, do you install them all together in the same CSI target zone?
