  • 1.  Combining VSAM Batch LSR with IMS Utility DFSRRC00 - Supported?

    Posted Mon July 03, 2023 01:18 PM

    Hello Z Community,

    I'm doing some ZBNA analysis (if you haven't tried it - give it a try - great insights gleaned).  As part of ZBNA findings, we indentified one VSAM index receiving ~7M Read I/O's in a single job step but the native program being run in batch job step is "DFSRRC00" IMS utility as follows:

    PGM=DFSRRC00,REGION=8M,PARM=(BMP, xxx(etc.))

    In this step is the DD statement for the VSAM file.  The ~7M I/O activity is all reads on the VSAM index which is only 1 track in size.  I want to apply Batch LSR buffering to this job step, but am concerned about using it in a job executing this IMS program name.  Are there any concerns in combining batch LSR VSAM buffering with IMS program in same batch job step - is this fully supported?

    Thanks much,

    Steve Estle

    There are no parameters set for BUFNI in the JCL - so default buffer settings.

    Steve -

    If the file is being processed via IMS calls, then all buffering will be managed via the DFSVSAMP (DD statement) specifications.  I'll be happy to assist with that.  If the file is being processed via native VSAM calls, then the buffering will be managed via BUFNI/BUFND specifications.  I can assist with that also.

    I would suggest trying setting the BUFNI to hold the full index (one
    track?) in memory as a first step.
