What's new in IBM Z ChatOps 1.1.1

IBM Z ChatOps 1.1.1 is available on June 18, 2021. Following major new features are added to this new release:

  • New Platform – Microsoft® Teams™
Same set of functions as Slack and Mattermost chat platform is supported for Microsoft Teams. You can talk with the bot to check the automation or monitoring status of resources on Z the same way you do in Slack and Mattermost. Z ChatOps is leveraging Common Bot Framework library instead of Hubot to create chat bots for Microsoft Teams.

  • New Chatbot library – the Common Bot Framework

The library is used to create chat bots for Microsoft Teams. The Common Bot Framework is an NPM library released along with Z ChatOps installation package. No extra installation is required. The whole installation process is therefore simplified for better experience.

  • The merging of Chatbot and Microservice components

The Chatbot and Microservice components for the previous release are merged in Z ChatOps 1.1.1 so as to simplify the installation and configuration process of Z ChatOps. With this change, you don't have to manage two processes or check corresponding logs in two different folders.

  • The removal of MongoDB dependency

In the previous release, MongoDB was used to cache all the received incidents, alerts, and events so that the Chatbot can post them to the chat platform. Due to the merging of Chatbot and Microservice components, any product can post incidents, alerts, and events to the chat platform directly without any configured delay now.

  • Installation enhancement
    • The base operating system of IBM Z ChatOps Docker image has been moved from Ubantu 20.04 to the latest Red Hat Universal Base Image 8.4.
    • For Microsoft Teams chat platform, the Common Bot Framework is adopted instead of Hubot. The Common Bot Framework will be installed along with IBM Z ChatOps. For Slack and Mattermost chat platform, Hubot is still needed as a prerequisite for Z ChatOps.

  • Existing feature enhancement
    • Replaced the commands and Simple Formed Sentences of application group and application with those of automation resource. There are several types of automation resource: APG (application group), APL (application), MTR, REF, and others, where APG and APL cannot cover all resources. With this replacement, you can use commands and Simple Formed Sentences of automation resource to check more resource data.
    • Changed the default sorting order of records in command response. All records in the command response are now sorted by resource status severity with the most severe one listed on the top and the least severe one listed at the bottom.
    • Wildcard-based filtering enhancement. The wildcard-based filtering function is performed on the data provider side now instead of Z ChatOps side as in the previous release. In this release, you can place the wildcard * at the beginning, the end, or both the beginning and the end of the command positional argument. For example, the command output for system list status *TC1 will list system whose name ends with "TC1"; the command output for system list status NETC* will list system whose name starts with "NETC"; the command output for system list status *TC* will list system whose name contains "TC".
    • Incident view enhancement. The common data model has been enhanced for product You can use any product to report incidents, alerts, and events now. The drilling down function in the view is also enhanced per the new target automation resource API.
