openSUSE Leap 15.5 released!

We all have received a new release  of openSUSE Leap 15.5 this month!

It includes also, that a Java 17 for Linux is available for the architecture s390x. You can run it on openSUSE Leap 15.5, SLES 15 SP5 and on openSUSE Tumbleweed, which is our rolling release.

You can download the latest iso images for IBM zSystems and LinuxONE from get.opensuse.org. If you need a matching Linux kernel for starting your VM, you can find it on download.opensuse.org.

The required s390x repositories for openSUSE Leap 15.5 are the following:

- https://download.opensuse.org/distribution/leap/15.5/repo/oss/

Also this year it is possible to use the same rpm packages of openSUSE Leap for SLES 15 SP5 and backwards because of the collaboration and backwards compatibility. The single difference is the support license for SLES. Therefore you can switch between both products (community product and Enterprise product).

Do you want to run Java 17 based on OpenJ9 on your mainframe? Then run the following command to install this Java version:

sudo zypper in java-17-openj9

It is also possible to compare it with the OpenJDK based Java 17. That is also available for the s390x architecture:

sudo zypper in java-17-openjdk

You can report us any issues via bugzilla.opensuse.org and the tag s390x. I will handle all bug reports regarding openSUSE for s390x.

Have you got any wishes for improvements or feature requests for the next version? Then you can add it as a comment.

If that is "really" mainframe specific, then it would be useful to receive additionally the usecase for the feature.

Enjoy our new release and have a lot of fun with Linux on IBM zSystems and LinuxONE!
