How Has Technology Shaped My Life | Hannan Khan (IBM Z Ambassador)

It is no doubt that technology has had a pivotal role in my life. It has not only been something that I can make a career out of, but it has also been a source of inspiration in my life 24/7. It is what separates our lives from the people before us and what will define what the future for looks like for us and the generations to come.

I had always been a shy, introverted kid with not much experience interacting with people from outside my immediate circles. I found solace in the tender embrace of tech. I threw myself in the world of technology, I read whatever I could get my hands on, be it blogs on cool new inventions or A Brief History of Time (the illustrated version) by Stephen Hawking. Something I never knew when I started my journey was that I could make a career out of what I love.

It was almost 4 years ago that I decided to pursue a degree in Computer Science, I had been programming for some time now and dabbling in professional web development for a while as well. It gave me the confidence to assume that maybe I should officially start my journey into the tech world and get enrolled in a degree program. Being a Computer Science student has been a fun ride, filled with many challenges and opportunities that I would have otherwise never been exposed to.

I also had the privilege of applying for the IBM Z Ambassador program in its second cohort. Although initially I was skeptical of my chances of getting in when I saw the immense pool of candidates, talented individuals from around the world. All these candidates shared a common interest, the curiosity for Enterprise Computing. I was fortunate enough to be selected into the program with almost 150 other diverse candidates. What drew me into IBM Enterprise Computing was getting to learn what goes on in the background of this massive aspect of the tech world, turning the curtain to see how it all functions. Did you know that Mainframes handle 90 percent of all credit card transactions and are used by 71 percent of Fortune 500 companies? And a single IBM z15 mainframe can handle 19 billion business transactions a day.

It is apparent that Enterprise Computing is the most underrated side of the tech world that plays a vital role in our everyday lives and how we live today, with many people not knowing that importance of mainframes and the skills needed to run them.
