IMS Fast Path Implementation – A new IMS course!

Check out the new IMS Fast Path course!

Why use IMS Fast Path?

Use IMS Fast Path to improve performance for simple transactions. When you have a high transaction volume with rapid database updates and inquiries, the Fast Path facilities offer several advantages over full-function DL/I processing.

In this course, you'll learn about Data Entry Databases, randomizers, areas, Fast Path database calls, high speed sequential processing, effective buffer pool strategies, DEDB Virtual Storage Option, data sharing for DEDBs, and more.

This is an advanced, comprehensive, self-paced course for IMS system administrators, database administrators, application designers, and application programmers who design or implement IMS Fast Path applications in an IMS Transaction Management (TM) or IMS Database (DBCTL) environment.

You'll need about 18 hours to complete the course, but when you do, you'll get a digital badge!

Prerequisites

You should have practical experience with IMS and z/OS systems. Before taking this course, you should have completed IMS Fundamentals or have equivalent working knowledge of IMS.

Objectives

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify IMS Fast Path components, their functions, benefits, and restrictions
  • Describe the processing of Fast Path resources in the IMS TM and DBCTL environment
  • Design and implement an Expedited Message Handler (EMH) environment and understand the benefits of shared EMH
  • Design and implement Data Entry Databases (DEDBs) and understand Main Storage Databases (MSDBs)
  • Implement high speed sequential processing (HSSP)
  • Implement the DEDB Virtual Storage Option (VSO)
  • Plan and implement the conversion of MSDBs to VSO-DEDBs
  • Develop an effective buffer pool strategy
  • Implement database and system recovery in a Fast Path environment
  • Implement data sharing for Fast Path DEDBs
  • Design operator procedures for managing Fast Path resources
  • Write application calls to Fast Path databases
