IMS Fundamentals—a new IMS self-paced online course

  

Are you new to IBM Information Management System (IMS)? If so, you're in the right place.

The IMS Fundamentals course introduces you to the components and services of IBM® IMS, how these components work together, and how applications interact with them in modern enterprise systems. 

This is a basic but comprehensive course for IMS database administrators, system programmers, and IMS Transaction Manager users who want learn about the IMS architecture, IMS databases, IMS Transaction Manager, and related components. You should have a basic understanding of database management or transaction management and a working knowledge of z/OS concepts, tools, and Job Control Language (JCL).

This course is appropriate for Information Technology professionals who work with or manage any of the IMS environments: Database (DB), Database and Transaction Manager (DB/DC), or Database Control subsystem (DBCTL).

There course is self-paced, no cost, and simply requires an IBM id to log in.

After completing this course, you should understand:
  • The IMS database system, processing database records in hierarchic sequence, and IMS database organization types
  • Database Description (DBD), program specification blocks (PSBs), and program communication blocks (PCBs)
  • Secondary indexes, sparse indexes, and logical relationships
  • The IMS control region and the basic IMS data communications functions of the IMS Transaction Manager
  • Message types, message scheduling, and message queues
  • Commit points in recovery and restart
  • Dynamic and batch backout, the system log, database backup
  • Conversational program in IMS
  • Database Recovery Control (DBRC), Integrated Resource Lock Manager (IRLM) for data sharing, and distributed processing
  • Connecting to other systems such as Db2 and CICS
