IBM OMEGAMON for Db2 – Q1 2025 enhancements delivered (PH64397/UO02637)

As organizations continue to rely on IBM Db2 for z/OS to drive mission-critical workloads, performance monitoring and optimization tools like IBM OMEGAMON for Db2 play a crucial role in ensuring efficiency and reliability.

With the latest enhancements introduced in Q1 of 2025 via APAR PH64397 (PTF UO02637, Fixpak 5.5.0-TIV-KD5-FP0016), OMEGAMON for Db2 brings another round of enhancements across the feature stack. Let's explore these updates in the following.

AHA! DB2ZOMEGA-I-76: Long Names support in Enhanced 3270 UI Thread History

OMEGAMON has introduced a new Enhanced 3270 UI panel, KDPHNAME, designed to provide better visibility into long name details within Thread History. The new panel can be accessed using  option N.
This enhancement implements AHA! idea
DB2ZOMEGA-I-76 and helps Db2 administrators to better analyze thread activity that is using long names for transaction identifiers.

Use the PF10 and FP11 function keys to scroll to the left/right to see the entire contents of the respective field.

You can embed this workspace in any other workspace, for example the thread accounting details, by customizing the workspace source accordingly.

Sample output that displays long names for several thread identifiers (some output fields are redacted)

IPv6 Support for Performance Expert Client

A major connectivity enhancement is the introduction of IPv6 support for the Performance Expert Client. Previously, communication with the OMEGAMON Collector PE Server sub-task was limited to IPv4. With this update, administrators can now use IPv4, IPv6, or a mixed IP configuration for better flexibility and future-proofing network communications.

  • The Configuration Manager/PARMGEN parameter KD2_OMPE_TCPIP_ADDRESS now supports IPv6 addresses up to 39 characters (previously limited to IPv4 only).
  • To utilize this feature, you must install the Performance Expert Client version referenced in the ++HOLD of the applicable PTF from FixCentral (see this landing page)
  • This enhancement ensures improved compatibility with modern network infrastructures and enables organizations to transition to an "IPv6 only" setup where required.

Optimized KPI and EDM Pool Workspaces

Performance improvements are always a consideration for enhancement releases. The performance of the following Enhanced 3270 UI workspaces has been improved:

  • KPI Workspace (KDPKPI4): Enhancements ensure more efficient monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs) while reducing resource usage.
  • EDM Pool Workspace (KDPEDMN): The redesign of this workspace results in better efficiency and lower overhead when analyzing EDM pool performance.

These changes lead to lower CPU usage, making OMEGAMON for Db2 more resource-efficient while providing the same level of insight and analytics.

Expanded CICS Transaction Server Support (TS62 and TS63)

The latest update brings also support for CICS Transaction Server (TS) versions 6.2 and 6.3 across multiple interfaces:

  • Classic Interface in panel ZCICST
  • Enhanced 3270 UI in workspace KDPCICS3
  • Tivoli Enterprise Portal workspaces showing CICS release information

Sample output that displays new CICS releases: 750 = CICS TS 6.2 - 760= CICS TS 6.3 (some output fields are redacted)

Conclusion

The Q1 2025 enhancements to OMEGAMON for Db2 showcase IBM’s and Rocket Software's continued commitment to improving performance monitoring, usability, and compatibility. From Enhanced 3270 UI capabilities and IPv6 support to optimized workspaces and expanded CICS TS monitoring, these updates provide Db2 administrators with more powerful tools to manage performance and troubleshoot issues efficiently.

The latest OMEGAMON updates ensure that enterprises stay ahead of performance bottlenecks while optimizing resource utilization.

Stay tuned for further updates to come!
