What’s New in IBM OMEGAMON for Messaging on z/OS V7.5.0 Fix Pack 8

IBM® OMEGAMON® for Messaging on z/OS® monitors availability and performance for IBM MQ for z/OS, IBM Integration Bus for z/OS, and IBM App Connect Enterprise on zCX.

The OMEGAMON for Messaging engineering team is excited to introduce V7.5.0 Fix Pack 8, with many enhancements for monitoring and managing your IBM Z messaging infrastructure.

As always, the team appreciates the feedback and ideas for improvement that we have received from the community. If you would like to submit an idea for our team to consider, please submit them in the IBM Idea Portal for product IBM OMEGAMON for Messaging on z/OS.

IBM MQ for z/OS Monitoring:

Performance monitoring of IBM MQ has been improved with the addition of reporting queue statistics collected from IBM MQ SMF Type 115 performance statistics records. While the product already has various options for monitoring queues, there is a wealth of detail in these records as of IBM MQ V9.3.3 for queues with STATQ enabled.  There is a break-down per queue of put, get and browse counts and bytes for persistent and non-persistent messaging, counts of various MQI requests, and long wished-for attributes like the expired message count, and put and get rollback counts.  This data is available for situations,  historical collection and ODP, and in current, recent and historical workspaces in both the enhanced 3270UI and TEP.

For selected queue, Recent SMF Queue Statistics shows the most recent samples of SMF data.
For selected queue, the latest sample of SMF Queue Statistics in detail format.

Administration of queue managers, queues and channels has been much improved in the enhanced 3270UI, so that you can make changes to these objects or add new ones in user-friendly tabbed screens, which no longer require that you remember specific parameters for a command like in the past.  This new facility relies on Take Action in the background, so your current security settings for Take Action remain applicable without change.  Now you truly will not want to leave the interface to make changes in some other MQ interface, because it is so easy in the enhanced 3270UI.  We invite you to let us know if there are any other MQ objects that you would like supported in the same way.

Alter Queue Manager:

One of many tabs available for updating a queue manager.

Alter Queue (Create Queue is also available):

One of several tab available for updating or creating a queue definition.

Create Channel (Alter Channel is also available):

The start dialog for creating a channel; then there are many tabs for updating or creating a channel.

Additionally, you can take an action to back up your queue manager definitions in MQSC format from the enhanced 3270UI, or as automation to a situation so that you can implement a regularly timed backup.  Example situation MQSeries_Automation_Backup_QMgr is provided with the new level of application support for this purpose.

Action B for queue manager initiates the backup of its definitions.
The action to back-up the queue manager has been initiated.
Product provided situation gives example of how to automate a backup of the queue manager.

Recently, the enhanced 3270UI framework started supporting the capability to bookmark workspaces.  Now with Fix Pack 8, several of the most used IBM MQ monitoring workspaces can be bookmarked using this facility.  Please let us know if you want to bookmark any workspace not yet included in this set.

The Log Data Set Status attribute group has been updated to provide more log Relative Byte Address (RBA) attributes so that you can better monitor this usage from either the enhanced 3270UI or TEP, or in situations.  New attributes provide the queue manager start RBA, the percent RBA used, and the percent RBA increased (since queue manager start).

The first workspace for the MQ tab in the enhanced 3270UI now includes the queue manager’s version so that you can more easily understand MQ version differences in your enterprise.

As always, we continue to make miscellaneous update for currency with recent IBM MQ releases.

Earlier in 2024, PTFs provided new standard start WTO messages KMQAG100I and KMQAG101E for the agent, improved situation processing for the Channel Status attribute group when there are multiple situations started for it, and various quality improvements, such as corrected values for some attributes in Application Connections and Queue Data.

IBM Integration Bus for z/OS / IBM App Connect Enterprise on zCX Monitoring:

Several recently added IBM Integration Bus V10.1 processing nodes are now included in our application support for display when you are collecting this data.

Like for MQ monitoring, now with Fix Pack 8, several of the most used IBM Integration Bus monitoring workspaces can be bookmarked using this facility.  Please let us know if you want to bookmark any workspace not yet included in this set.

As always, we continue to make miscellaneous updates for currency with recent IBM Integration Bus and App Connect Enterprise on zCX releases.

Earlier in 2024, PTFs provided new standard start WTO messages KQIAG100I and KQIAG101E for the agent and various quality improvements, such as corrected values for some attributes in Message Flow Status for ACE on zCX.
