🐣 Easter Eggs in AI: Hidden Features of IBM Z's AI Tools - Part 1

A Fun Exploration of Lesser-Known but Powerful Features

Welcome to the first part of our series where we uncover the "Easter Eggs" – those hidden, delightful features – within IBM Z's AI tools. Far from being simple tricks, these features are robust capabilities that can supercharge your applications.

Last IBM Z Day in 2023, Robert Catterall, an Internationally recognized DB2 consultant, speaker, author and Senior Consulting DB2 for z/OS Specialist at IBM, and I presented "Infusing AI into z/OS-based applications - the why and the how." It was a hit with the audience, and now, I'm excited to share the essence of this presentation in a written format for IBM Z newcomers.

In-Transaction Predictive Modeling

The magic begins with a predictive model developed by a data scientist. This model can be deployed on a z/OS system, making it accessible to applications without needing expertise in z/OS. Applications can call upon this model to receive a "score" – a prediction based on input data. This process, known as "model inferencing," allows the program to take immediate action based on this score. Imagine processing thousands of transactions per second, each enriched with predictive insights, all within about a millisecond.

Analytical AI

Consider a database as a galaxy of "entities" – customers, suppliers, transactions. These entities could number in the millions, even billions. By recognizing patterns of similarity or dissimilarity, a z/OS-based database management system can reveal insights across this vast data space with an efficient and simple interface for pattern recognition technology.

Generative AI

Generative AI refers to models that create content. On z/OS, these AI models can:

  1. Summarize lengthy documents
  2. Respond to customer inquiries with intelligence
  3. Analyze customer communications for sentiment
  4. Transform and refactor code

Use Cases:

Fraud Detection and Prevention

In the past, fraud detection happened after the fact, often when it was too late. Now, AI on IBM Z can spot potential fraud in the act, even with high volume and tight response times, changing the game from "Pay and pray" to proactive prevention.

Real-time Cross- and Up-sell Opportunity Detection

Imagine identifying the perfect up-sell for a customer in real-time. What was historically a missed opportunity can now be captured by technology that pinpoints personalized offers as the transaction happens.

New Marketing Insights

Gone are the days of slow, complex analysis to replicate successful offers. Today's AI can identify which customers are likely to respond to specific offers by comparing them to those who previously did, all with a simple database inquiry.

Smarter Customer Care

Customer support has evolved from generic chatbot responses to intelligent, conversational interactions. AI now ensures that if a customer like Greg Lee escalates to a live representative, the hand-off is seamless and informed, preventing bad situations from worsening.

Conclusion

Join us in this journey as we delve deeper into each of these features in upcoming posts. This is just the beginning; stay tuned for more hidden treasures in IBM Z's AI tools.
