Unleash SMCv2 in your enterprise! - Shared Memory Communications Version 2 overview

  • Time: August 9th, 2022, 11:00 AM (EST)
  • Speakers: Jerry Stevens, Randy Kunkel
  • Abstract: This session will provide a brief introduction and overview of SMCv2, SMC-Dv2, and SMC-Rv2. Additional information will be provided for SMC-Rv2 along with RoCEv2 ("Routable RoCE") including the IBM z16 and RoCE Express3. SMC-Rv2 uses RoCEv2 technology which uses your existing IP topology and IP routes to extend the reach of RDMA thereby expanding the benefits of SMC-R to additional application workloads. In this session you will learn how you can define and control the scope of SMCv2 connection eligibility and how to identify potential use cases that could benefit from the savings in network related CPU cost, reduced latency, and increased throughput. Learn how you can unleash SMCv2 in your enterprise!

z/OS Communications Server Technical Update: z/OS V2R5 Edition (2021.12)

  • Speaker: Sam Reynolds, Mike Fitzpatrick
  • Abstract: In this session, the speakers will provide a look at new features in z/OS Communications Server from z/OS V2.5 and continuous delivery. New features to be discussed include:
    • Shared Memory Communications multiple subnet support (SMCv2), with a focus on the new SMC-Rv2 capability
    • An introduction to z/OS Encryption Readiness Technology (zERT) policy-based enforcement
    • Notification of availability of TCP/IP extended services
    • … and more!
  • Session replay available on ON24

Introduction to IBM Shared Memory Communications Version 2 (SMCv2) and SMC-Dv2 (2020.9)

  • Speaker: Jerry Stevens, Randy Kunkel
  • Abstract: IBM recently announced SMCv2 for SMC-Dv2. SMCv2 defines Shared Memory Communications for TCP/IP connections that span multiple IP subnets. This presentation will introduce how this new capability applies to SMC-Dv2 for z/OS V2R4 and ISMv2 for the IBM z15. The key concepts of the SMC-Dv2 will be introduced along with an overview of how to get started using the new solution with z/OS 2.4. The overview will also cover exploitation and configuration considerations for existing SMC-D users and for new SMC-Dv2 only users. In this presentation, customers will learn about this new capability and how this capability can extend the performance benefits of SMC-D to additional System Z workloads.

IBM z/OS Communications Server z/OS Encryption Readiness Technology (zERT) (2020.6)

  • Speaker: Chris Meyer
  • Abstract: Back in 2017, we introduced you to a new capability called z/OS Encryption Readiness Technology (zERT). zERT provides z/OS network security administrators the data they need to understand and assess the quality of the cryptographic protection being applied to their z/OS network traffic. This session will cover new zERT features that have been added, including the zERT Network Analyzer (a z/OSMF plugin), a healthy list of IBM and ISV products that consume zERT SMF data, some new configuration options, and a few hints and tips.
